The Joint Venture CPB Contractors – Samsung – John Holland has been selected by WestConnex Delivery Authority (WDA) to design and construct Sydney’s M4 East Motorway. WestConnex is Australia’s largest transport infrastructure project. Seven kilometres in total length, the M4 East will join the M4 Widening at Homebush Bay Drive and provide a 5.5 kilometre tunnel with three lanes in each direction from the M4 at North Strathfield to Parramatta Road and the City West Link, Haberfield. The CPB John Holland Samsung JV partners have extensive experience in tunnelling and major infrastructure delivery in Australia and internationally.
The project includes a 30 m long shared pedestrian and cycle underpass through an embankment beneath four live passenger rail tracks. The underpass is being constructed as a mined tunnel with large diameter canopy tubes without disruption to rail services. Fully responsible for planning, procurement and implementation, including site mobilisation, installation of monitoring systems, ground treatment, fibreglass dowels, canopy tubes, excavation and lining of the underpass.
The project includes a 148 m long rail underpass to enable freight trains to traverse beneath four live passenger rail tracks. The underpass was constructed as a mined tunnel without disruption to rail services. Responsibilities included: Analysis/selection of plant for tunnel excavation, including procurement for all tunnel plant Developing Activity Method Statements (AMS) Installation of canopy tubes, shotcrete lining, installation of rock bolts and tunnel services Settlement monitoring system Construction of acoustic shed Site power distribution, water treatment plant and ventilation systems
The Hills M2 motorway links the North West region to the lower north shore and Sydney’s CBD. The project is technically challenging, with construction taking place in a live motorway environment, working a rotating roster with three different crews 24 hour per day, 7 days per week. Responsibilities and duties included: Analysis/selection of plant and equipment for excavation inside and outside the tunnel, planning, scheduling, co-ordination of site activities, subcontractor management, daily coordination with M & E team and shift instruction. Cost control and analysis, highlighting the emerging trends where actual costs deviate from planned within the forecasted budget of tunnel construction. Responsible for forecast, 3 week look ahead program, QA records, on site quality control, production monitoring, supervision of operations and subcontractors, contract and claim management, procurement, site logistics, development of SHESWMS, CMS, PCP’s and checklists, carrying out constructability reviews, liaising with the designer on design related issues (RFI), producing weekly reports.
SHIFT ENGINEER – TOOMBUL SECTION – CC420 JACKING BOX The project involved the construction of Twin 3-lane road tunnels 2.3 km long, twin 2-lane road tunnels 2.8 km long, 2.8 km of underground ramps and twin 2-lane bus lane tunnels 1.5 km long, working 24 hours per day, 7 days per week rotating roster with three different crews. Responsibilities and duties included: Analysis/ selection of plant and equipment for construction of jacking and base slab, planning, scheduling, co-ordination of site activities and subcontractor management. Cost control and analysis, highlighting the emerging trends where actual costs deviate from planned within the forecasted budget of the jacking slabs and jack boxes construction. Responsible for QA records, on site quality control, production monitoring, supervision of operations and subcontractors, procurement, site logistics, development of JSEA’s, WMS, ITP’s and checklists, constructability reviews, liaising with the designer, producing weekly reports, design of monorails for smoke duct beam installation. SHIFT ENGINEER – TOOMBUL SECTION – CC410 LAUNCH BOX The CC410 team worked on a 24 hour, 7 day continuous roster with three crews. Duties included: Analysis and selection of plant and equipment for bulk earth works (mobilised a 150 tonne crawler crane with a bell skip – 11.40m3 capacity)/40m3/h compacted volume of excavation. Planning, scheduling, co-ordination of site activities and subcontractor management. Cost and budget control and highlighting emerging trends where costs deviate from budget for excavation, quality assurance records, production monitoring, supervision of operations and subcontractors, procurement, site logistics, development of JSEA’s, ITP’s and checklists, liaising with design issues.
