As founding partner of STEP GmbH (1992) it was my duty to define the strategy, build the organization and manage operations. Choosing SGML services for commercial-, professional- and corporate- publishers as the core business focus we soon became Europe's premier SGML powerhouse. The conception of SigmaLink (Europe's first SGML based content management system) and its acceptance by the majority of Europe's reference publishers as well as our successful implementation of the first SGML-based CMS in the Airline-Industry (for Lufthansa) helped us to successfully spread into other market segments and global companies alike: Schlumberger, Rockwell Collins, GE Healthcare to name just a few. At the same time SigmaLink became the corporate CMS of choice for the Wolters Kluwer group as well as the backbone of Wiley's Journal Production CMS. During this period (1995 to 2001) STEP expanded from Germany to USA, UK, Norway, Hungary and Poland with partners all over the world including down under. STEP was 1999 acquired by Bertelsmann and merged with other companies to become Empolis while SigmaLink (now labeled CLS) - continuously further developed - became one of the leading XML CMSs in the world.
