Thirty years of caring for patients with urologic condition has demonstrated the positive evolution of urologic practice and the negative financial evolution that medicine faces. I have dedicated my career to advancing the care of patients with urologic malignancies and have been part of developing many advances (i.e. Prostate Cancer Vaccine, HIFU, Advanced Imaging, Robotics). I have recently begun to focus on ways to practice urology in a more time efficient and cost effective manner while getting an IU Kelley MBA. Developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches is useless if patients can’t access these new technologies because of expense and/or insurance issues. During the MBA, I immediately recognized the potential to apply organizational change strategies with a modified system redesign approach to improve my local healthcare setting. As Chief of the Urology Service at the Indianapolis VAMC, I have completed a series of redesign projects focused on the procedures and patient flow through the VAMC Urology Clinic. Combining a physician champion with a modified Lean/Six Sigma approach, my team was able to realize a 3-5 million-dollar annual savings from the operations of this one VAMC Urology clinic. These savings are derived from the efficient utilization of the facility, leading to increase capacity without additional personnel. For example, applying these modified redesign techniques to several of the outpatient procedures, led to a decrease from 100 to 30 minutes of total time in the clinic. This improved both the timeliness and the access of care for the veterans. Days until third next available procedure drop form high thirties to mid-teens. Recently, the key members of our team have begun to create a consultant agency, that can help your organization achieve similar transformational change.
