About

Transportation plays a bigger role in the world than most realize. Connecting countries, cities, businesses and people, it binds our world together. From high-speed rail networks and IT infrastructure, to walking and cycling paths, it carries goods, services, and people across the globe. Trained as a civil engineer and experienced in rail, road, and airport design - I started out in this field by focusing on the physical design and construction of infrastructure. Seeing how they shaped communities and regions, I returned to my studies to dive deeper into transportation's role in society, the economy, and the environment. During my master’s program at TUM, I focused on studying sustainable urban transport and transport governance. To cap off my studies, my master's examined the relationship between certain aspects of the built environment and the prevalence of cycling across the city of Munich. While living abroad, however, I've found a new passion that was certainly not a module of my degree - a new interest in writing and teaching. I have gained an interest not only in sustainable urban transportation and transport governance, but also in effectively sharing this information with the public.

  • Aviation Engineer at Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc.
    Jun 2013 - May 2015 · 2 yrs

Project Experiences: Chicago-Rockford International Airport, Rockford IL Falcon Rd. / Airport Drive: Rehabilitation and partial reconstruction of 1.5 miles of a 2-lane bituminous roadway as well the complete reconstruction and widening of nearly 1 mile of 2-lane concrete roadway. Role: Design Engineer assisting with alignment and profile generation of both roadways; responsible for the grading and drainage design on both roadways in addition to a new storm sewer network for the concrete roadway. Also created a 3D model of the roadway corridors complete with grading areas and storm sewer network to aid in the analysis of the proposed improvements interface with existing conditions. Midfield Aircraft Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Facility: Design sitework, roadway, parking lot, aprons, and utilities of a new development at the Chicago-Rockford International Airport. Tasked with using Autodesk Infraworks to generate a 3D model of the airport complete with a detailed model of the future MRO facility including topography, new taxiways, aprons, hangars and other facilities. Animations and renderings generated were utilized in meetings with the public, the client, and other stakeholders to help then visualize the project. Chicago Executive Airport, Wheeling IL Runway 16/34 Engineered Material Arrestor System (EMAS): Design of an EMAS for the primary runway at the airport. An EMAS system consists of a series of low-strength concrete blocks of increasing height which is utilized at urban airports to greatly reduce the risk of an aircraft traveling off the end of the runway and beyond airport limits. Role: Design asphalt pad to support the EMAS blocks beyond the runway end, and also design a grading and drainage system on the sides and behind the runway. Create and use a 3D model to analyze the location of utilities below the EMAS area to assure profile and grading provide for enough cover above all utility lines.
