My name is Thanos Kakoulidis, and I am an experienced bariatric and laparoscopic surgeon, working in Thessaloniki, Greece and Stockholm, Sweden. I studied medicine in Gothenburg, Sweden and graduated in 1995. After completing my internship in the United Kingdom, I moved to the United States where I trained as a general surgeon at Vanderbilt University and at the University of Colorado. I returned to Europe, Sweden, in 2006 and specialized in bariatric and laparoscopic surgery, alongside Dr. Dag Arvidsson, the innovative surgeon who introduced and developed the laparoscopic operative technique in Scandinavia in the 1990s. Already in 2006, together with Dr. Dag Arvidsson, we were the first to apply the gastric sleeve operation (also known as sleeve gastrectomy) in Scandinavia, for patients with obesity. We were also the first to perform bariatric operations for body mass index of 30-35 (type I obesity), with great success in both cases. From 2006 until now, I have participated in many European and international conferences, where I have communicated my research work with articles and publications. My papers have been published in well-known surgical journals and have led to a medicine licentiate degree in collaboration with Uppsala University in Sweden. Equally important, I have worked with the largest bariatric and laparoscopic centers in Sweden but also in Norway, having enriched my experience with a large and varied number of operations. I have performed more than 3000 bariatric operations, including revisions and reoperations. Currently, I work as a senior surgical consultant in my hometown of Thessaloniki as well as at Sophiahemmet, a very well renown private surgical clinic in Stockholm, Sweden.
