Physicist and Engineer with 47 years experience of innovation. Early research at the UK's Institute of Oceanographic Sciences resulted in the first two axis ship-borne Acoustic Doppler measurements of ocean currents. Roles in geophysics and ocean science industry led to the foundation of Scimar Engineering in 1987. Tim is the author of patents in mechanical engineering, ocean science, DC-DC conversion (the 'Split-Pi' topology) wireless communications, the Mutually Coupled motor, wind power, and the original and only 'Coriolis Piston Engine. He was a founder of LastMile Communications Ltd, 3D Instruments Ltd and Green Energy Technologies Ltd and Tradewind Turbines Ltd, now co-founder-director and CTO of Scorpio Technology Ltd a start-up focused on air purification against pathogens (inc SARS-CoV-2) and allergens Specialties: Magnetics, Acoustics, Electronics, Mechanics, Electric Motors, Wind Power, Signal Processing and Communications, DC-DC conversion, Product design, Manufacturing, Engineering and General Management
Scimar was formed to provided engineering services to the Scientific and Marine industries. It still retains interests in Ocean Science but in recent years the main interest has been in very high efficiency DC-DC converters, and very recently in very high torque DC motors for the wider Green Energy market and particularly hybrid vehicles, being proponents and suppliers of Low Voltage technology. Scimar founded Green Energy Technologies to address this market specifically
Green Energy Technologies Ltd developed the 'Split-Pi' high power (1-20kW) high efficiency (typ 98%) high power density (1-5 kW/kg) UDIO (Up-Down-In-Out or bi-directional Boost-Buck) DC-DC converters for hybrid and electric vehicles and the general 'Green' energy industries. These enable Full Series Hybrid or Pure Electric vehicles with low voltage static storage (<50V) due to the Up-Down (Boost-Buck) capability and natural full efficiecy regeneration due to the In-Out (bi-directional) capability. It also has R&D projects running on very high torque Low Voltage DC motors for direct gearless wheel drive of full scale family cars (to 2000kg)
