Investigated a submarine core from the hydrothermal vent system of Brothers Volcano Analyzed the abundance of sulfur-bearing minerals and sulfur oxidation state as a function of depth How does this play a role in our understanding of the origin of life? Previously, I have tested applications of the Picarro laser spectrometer for methane C isotope determination in marine hydrothermal samples, determining at what threshold the laser yields inaccurate data.
Studied the effects of crude oil and Corexit (a dispersant) on a particular phytoplankton species, Phaedactylum tricornutum, through the OCEANUS program at Texas A&M at Galveston. This is a program under the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates. What is special about P. tricornutum is that it is a diatom (siliceous shell-bearing species) that was previously found to be resilient to both crude oil and harsh Corexit. Our research shows that P. tricornutum begins reproducing after "eating" enough oil to establish a level of equilibrium within the environment, some number of days later.
