The Substance Beneath the Surface: — Branding, Slow Living & Soulful Businesses

Greater Kuala Lumpur

About

From as far back as I can remember, I’ve moved through the world with quiet curiosity, drawn to where branding meets culture, where business becomes more than transaction, and where objects, spaces, and experiences carry meaning beyond their function. I studied psychology not to become a therapist, but to better understand people. What we wear, what we buy, how we gather, and how we live all reveal deeper stories about identity, aspiration, and belonging. My path has been unconventional. From hospitality, F&B and retail to event management, brand strategy, communications, public relations, and service. Each chapter has reinforced the same lesson: people rarely remember information, but they remember how something made them feel. Along the way, I developed a growing fascination with craftsmanship, material culture, heritage, and the evolving meaning of quality in a rapidly changing world. Increasingly, I find myself drawn to the intersection of commerce, culture, and curation—exploring how thoughtful brands, objects, and traditions can connect people across places, generations, and ways of living. Today, that perspective shapes everything I do, whether through storytelling, brand-building, experiences, partnerships, or the ongoing discipline of refining one’s eye and understanding. I’m particularly interested in the future of luxury, not as a symbol of excess, but as an expression of intention, longevity, craftsmanship, and care. I believe the most enduring brands will be those that balance commercial success with cultural relevance and human dignity. From the edge of the Malay Archipelago, I remain curious about how local traditions, global craftsmanship, and contemporary life might speak to one another. Much of my work—and many of my questions—live within that space. I admire people and brands that treat business not merely as commerce, but as a vehicle for stewardship, culture, and meaningful contribution. If that resonates, let’s connect.

What began as a mobility role evolved into an education in hospitality, service, and human connection. Over the course of a year, as a GrabCar Plus driver-partner, I spent thousands of hours engaging with local and international guests from different cultures, professions, and backgrounds while covering 200–300 km daily across the Klang Valley. The experience reinforced a long-standing fascination with people, culture, and the subtle ways meaningful experiences shape perception, trust, and belonging.

Resilience, Reflection & the Pursuit of Longevity During this time, I prioritized my health after a prolonged illness that required intensive treatment. It was one of the most challenging chapters of my life—yet a necessary recalibration. A test of resilience, adaptability, and my lifelong commitment to longevity—not just in health, but in craftsmanship, learning, and impact. Even in stillness, I remained engaged—deepening my knowledge in branding, psychology, and human connection while self-learning coding and data science. My carefully curated Twitter feed served as a research tool, allowing me to mine insights across industries, distilling patterns and strategies that now shape everything I build. In hindsight, this was more than a detour; it was a deliberate pause, refining my lens on excellence, intentionality, and long-term vision. That clarity now defines how I approach both life and work.

Honoring Legacy, Cultivating Community, & Crafting Stories That Last Caring for my 99-year-old grandmother—whom I grew up with—until her passing due to COVID was a profound experience that reshaped my understanding of legacy, continuity, and the stories we leave behind. During this time, I channeled my energy into two projects that reinforced my understanding of community-building, storytelling, and brand longevity. 1. Sekolah Kebangsaan Crypto → A Telegram-based community I launched, growing it to 130+ members, with a Twitter Space that went viral overnight—demonstrating the power of narrative and engagement in shaping perception. 2. Simpul Perth → I worked with my partner to establish a Malaysian brand’s digital presence in Perth, helping a small independent business secure retail placements in a foreign market. Both projects reaffirmed a belief I hold close: Branding isn’t just about visibility—it’s about preserving heritage, fostering belonging, and crafting something that endures.
