Dr. Steven D'Hondt centers his research and teaching on understanding the interplay between the biosphere and the physical world. He leads and publishes scientific research projects in a broad range of fields, including geobiology, geochemistry, and global ocean change. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal publications and ~20 book chapters and scientific perspectives. He has led multiple oceanographic expeditions with teams of 22 to 55 scientists continuously at sea for up to 68 days. His current projects include collaborative studies of (1) adaptation and evolution of subseafloor life (the only global biome that remains largely untouched by human activity), (2) coastal subsidence in cities throughout the world, (3) hydrogen production by mineral-water interactions, and (4) how long water lingers in the deepest regions of the ocean.
