More the topic below: If you’re professionally visible and well-known to many, you’re said to be “above the line,” and if not, you’re considered to be “below the line.” I’ve borrowed this terminology from the entertainment industry, where higher-value people and roles are considered “above the line.” As a longtime exec coach and visibility partner to many execs, I’m often asked to comment on how well-known a client is professionally. That’s important because, as it’s sometimes said, "it’s not enough to be great, you have to be known to be great." This has many benefits, which are listed in the article. Very invisible To be “known” (above the line), you have to make a serious effort to be seen and heard as “talent” (great at what you do) in the “talent versus toast” reality of today’s competitive and commoditized career and startup market. So, whether you’re a corporate employee, an employee wanting to try entrepreneurship or already an entrepreneur, you need to know your rating and its impact. A quick Google search will say a lot about you, your brand , your company and your reputation, and it’s a good first step. But below is a more formal scale for rating yourself. In the example above, there are four levels or ratings: 2 above the line, either “visible” or “very visible,” and 2 below the line, either “invisible” or “very invisible.” Let’s see where you are and don't miss my important summary at the end.
