I do integration, system, and acceptance testing on HVAC controllers, lighting controls, and power monitors. Some of the devices run Linux. This involves working with Modbus protocol over RS485 and XML. I also do some hardware testing and troubleshooting. On occasion I write Python scripts (running under Linux on a PC) or C programs (for PIC microcontroller) to automate some test tasks.
I wrote and executed test plans and procedures which were used to perform testing on telecom equipment. When I first began my work in this position the product was simple enough that I handled all of the test duties by myself. Over the years the product's feature list grew and I began to oversee a team of testers while continuing to test the product as well. The products supported a wide variety of features so I worked with IP addressing, data, VoIP (including SIP and H.323 codecs), video, Wi-Fi, ADSL, and VDSL. I also worked on products which verified the condition of the copper lines going to a customer's home and this included voltage/current/resistance measurements along with time domain reflectometers. On occasion I would write test scripts in Tcl and Python to automate some of the testing.
I handled all of the testing duties for our line of products. This involved subjecting the product to a variety of physical stresses; often while measuring power loss. I also programmed temperature chambers and spliced fiber optic cable with a fusion splicer.
