Teach music to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, created a flourishing program with more than 40 students, prepared students for middle-school level band program.
Stephen Bingen began playing trumpet in 5th grade, took up the French Horn in 9th grade and has been playing both ever since. Mr. Bingen studied Music Education and Horn Performance with Pete Nowlen and Steve Roach at Sacramento State University. While in college he taught before- and after-school band programs at O.W. Erlewine Elementary and Sam Brannan Middle School. Mr. Bingen currently teaches beginning and intermediate band at Crocker-Riverside Elementary in the Sacramento Unified School District. In February of 2008, Stephen Bingen was hired as the Jazz Band Director for the Sacramento Youth Band and since then has expanded the jazz program to include two jazz ensembles comprised over 30 young musicians. As a freelance horn player, Mr. Bingen has performed as a guest horn soloist with the California High School All-State Honor Choir, the Sac State Combined Choir, and most recently with the CMEA Capitol Section Honor Choir. Mr. Bingen has performed with the VITA Academy Orchestra, Camellia Symphony Orchestra, Sacramento State Orchestra, Folsom Lake Symphony, and the Sierra Symphony. In 2011 Mr. Bingen was invited to be a guest band director at the ARC Summer Jazz Workshop, and will return for the 2012 workshop. Mr. Bingen also plays trumpet and has played with 3 separate local bands, receiving a total of 5 Sammie Awards. While attending Sac State he received several scholarships as a member of the Liberace Woodwind Quintet.
Sacramento Youth Band was founded in 1957. Today it consists of a Concert Band, a Junior Band, and 2 Jazz Bands. I was hired in 2008 and since then have expanded the program to include 2 jazz bands, the newest jazz band in 2010.
