The primary role of Council is to define CIOL's strategic objectives and monitor their implementation. It is made up of a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 elected members. As an elected Member of Council, and in my day-to-day active role as a linguist, I work to represent the interests of professional colleagues who are members of the Institute and to promote the vision and aims of the Chartered Institute of Linguists founded on the belief that knowledge of languages and intercultural competence benefit society economically, culturally and politically.
Assess candidates’ oral and written skills in Latin American Spanish. Evaluate speaking skills based on role-play activities in a military context, general conversation and presentation tasks. Conduct exams and complete mark sheets. Operate devices to record exams and ensure completion of all documentation. Understand requirements of STANAG 6001. Study the subjects to be covered in the exam in order to be fully prepared at the time of the evaluation. Remain consistent in the application of the same marking standards across the whole cohort. Mark objectively and in line with guidance on the mark sheets.
In charge of developing a course, setting aims and planning lessons to teach Spanish to FCO civil servants. Responsible for designing group learning activities to foster language acquisition and communication, by integrating the passive skills of listening and reading with more active skills of speaking and writing. Assessed students on a daily basis and promoted further practise and self-study exercises of vocabulary and grammar that needed consolidation.
Provided office and administrative support to executive and senior Managers. Deputised in the absence of the Corporate Secretariat Office Manager. Handled confidential material from Human Resources, took and typed minutes in meetings between Management and Unions. Set up systems for collecting, collating, processing and distributing information. Organized agendas, arranged meetings, circulated papers as required.
