Industry: Advanced Materials/ Plastics Manufacturing Innovation and Goal: Environmentally sustainable production of bioplastics using microalgal starch and cellulose as feedstocks. Responsibilities: R&D management for the production of microalgal starch and cellulose; project coordination support to the project manager for the Nenu2PHAr European Union’s Horizon 2020 and the Bio Based Industries Consortium project. Responsibilities: • Collaboration with multidisciplinary team and development of a combination of cellular, molecular and fluorescence microscopy techniques to investigate alga-bacteria relationships • Developing automated cell-counting protocols using ImageJ, an image processing and analysis software • Engagement with industry partner to explore potential real-life application of study Achievements: Successful characterisation of bacterial populations and interactions with model alga; improved culture methods for more robust culture of same alga.
