Sofia Maria Satanakis studied Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies in Thessaloniki, Greece and obtained a Master's Degree in European Studies from the University of Vienna. She is currently responsible for Scientific Outreach and Event Management at the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information (IQOQI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. In 2013 Sofia Maria joined the Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES) where she currently holds the position of Senior Associate Fellow. Her research covers the topic European integration, focusing on EU foreign, security and defence policy and the Western Balkans. Additionally, since 2018 she is an Associate Researcher at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). Since 2017 she is also a Member of the Cologne Forum for International Relations and Security Policy (KFIBS e.V.) dealing with current European developments. Before joining the AIES, Sofia Maria Satanakis successfully completed internships at the Austrian Embassy in Athens and at the Greek Embassy in Vienna.
Main focus on European Integration, Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP), the Western Balkans, Greece, Turkey and their relations.
