As Shipboard Public Health Officer with Viking Ocean Cruises, I am responsible for the implementation and oversight of all onboard public health programs in compliance with USPH, PHAC, WHO, and EU SHIPSAN standards. I lead communicable disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and response, and infection prevention and control (IPC) measures across all vessel departments. My role involves conducting internal audits and sanitation inspections, monitoring potable water and recreational water systems, and ensuring food safety practices are maintained at every stage of the supply chain. I deliver targeted training and corrective action plans to crew, working collaboratively with food & beverage, housekeeping, medical, and technical teams to ensure inspection readiness and continuous improvement. By combining regulatory compliance with proactive risk management, I safeguard passenger and crew health while supporting the operational excellence of the cruise line.
As a Pharmacy Assistant in Queenstown, I played a key role in both customer service and sales, assisting a diverse range of clients—including tourists and locals—with tailored product recommendations. My duties included driving shipboard compliance and fostering commitment to the highest public health standards in areas such as Disease Surveillance, Prevention and Control of Infectious Illnesses, Food Safety, Potable & Recreational Water Safety, and Integrated Pest Management through structured audits, training programs, and effective communication both onboard and shoreside. • Supervised the implementation and ensured compliance with shipboard prevention and control activities at response levels 1, 2, and 3, encompassing Covid-19, Acute Gastroenteritis, and other communicable diseases. • Contributed expertise and guidance as a pivotal member of the onboard Outbreak Prevention Response Team. • Orchestrated drills based on Carnival's Outbreak Prevention Response Plan to ensure thorough training, equipping, and readiness of all crew members for effective responses to communicable disease outbreaks. • Directed the sampling, monitoring, and analysis of Potable & Recreational Water Facilities to guarantee adherence to pertinent public health standards. • Scrutinized internal and external inspection reports to discern trends and prevent recurrent deficiencies. • Conducted internal audits of shipboard public health programs and activities to validate compliance with international mandates. • Supervised the Integrated Pest Management program's execution and adherence onboard the vessel.
As Laboratory Supervisor of the SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic laboratories on board Viking Cruises’ Ocean vessels, I successfully trained and managed a team of Laboratory Technicians to produce Covid-19 qPCR results in a semi-automated high-throughput workflow, while constantly ensuring that biosafety regulations were met. In addition, my tasks included manual pipetting of biohazard material, handling of the laboratory machines and robots, analysis of the raw result data, communication of the results to the medical team and the generation of qPCR test certificates. As the supervisor, it was my responsibility to ensure that every step of the process was executed according to the SOPs and recorded in a LIMS. When problems arose with the laboratory equipment or mistakes were made during the workflow, I decided the actions taken to assure the quality of the generated results. Moreover, I oversaw the decontamination of the laboratory and always made sure the corresponding documentation was up-to-date. Additionally, I was in charge of the installation of new laboratory equipment, ordering of consumables and logistics on board. Finally, I liaised with various Head of Departments to provide a smooth operation of the laboratory in order to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 on board.
I was involved in all aspects of tourism on Australia's first ever Pearl Farm. Besides working in the Front of House and Back of House of the onsite restaurant, I was responsible for the housekeeping in the hotel area. Moreover, I was involved in implementing Pearl Farm Tours for our guests to educate them about the history of the pearl farm, the biology of pearl oysters and the operation of a commercial pearl oyster farm. The tour included the dissection of a pearl oyster and demonstration of pearl harvest and grading. Last but not least, I worked as a farm hand on board a pearling vessel and cleaned pearl oysters in a high-throughput setting.
