I founded Vivisolari to investigate a simple but increasingly urgent question: who really owns energy? In 2022, energy prices across Europe tripled almost overnight. Governments spent more than €800 billion stabilising a system that was supposed to deliver cheap electricity. Families froze, businesses collapsed, and the crisis was widely blamed on geopolitics and the war in Ukraine. Yet in some places the shock barely registered. That contrast led to a deeper investigation into how modern energy systems are designed and who they ultimately serve. Through Vivisolari I explore the structure of energy markets: ownership of generation, control of the wires, pricing mechanisms, and the financial architecture that governs electricity systems across Europe and beyond. The focus is not simply on technology—solar panels, wind farms, or batteries—but on the institutional and market structures that determine how energy flows and who benefits when prices rise. This work combines research, writing, and practical experimentation. My book In the Dark traces how decades of privatisation and market reform reshaped energy systems around extraction rather than affordability, often leaving households exposed to volatility while insulating infrastructure owners from risk. Alongside this investigative work, Vivisolari explores emerging models that could rebalance power in the system: community ownership of energy assets, local generation and electrification, and new forms of cooperative infrastructure that prioritise resilience and affordability. The aim is not only to understand how the system works, but to document pathways through which households and communities can move from being passive consumers of energy to active participants in its production and governance. At its core, Vivisolari is about one question: Who owns energy—and what would it take to take power back?
