For over 20 years I have specialised in the understanding and application of Building Physics using a broad range of simulation techniques including dynamic simulation, computational fluid dynamics, daylight simulation, energy modelling and bespoke tools. My work also includes the evaluation of building performance post-occupancy (POE) and in-use building performance evaluation (BPE) including energy consumption, building fabric performance, diagnostics and bench-marking. I am a certified Passivhaus Designer, a member of the Passivhaus Trust and of the AECB working on a number of residential and non-residential projects, which have adopted Passivhaus or AECB standards of design and construction. I have worked on a substantial number of projects across a wide range of sectors including commercial, sport, leisure, cultural, residential, research and educational buildings. Projects include The French National Archive at Amiens, The British Library Boston Spa, The Arts Works for NGS in Edinburgh, Lords Compton and Edrich Stands and Tavern and Allen Stands, The Globe Theatre, The Louvre Abu Dhabi, The Grand Museum of Egypt The QFS World Cup Stadium Qatar, Bristol BSF Schools, The Sainsbury Laboratory, Whitworth Art Gallery, NHM Collections Storage, The V&A Furniture Gallery, Exeter University Forum and the Wessex Water HQ in Bath. At Wessex Water I was engaged from the very earliest stages through detailed design, procurement, construction, handover, ‘soft landings’ and post-handover POE. Previously I practiced as an MEP Engineer, engaged in a wide variety of projects in the UK, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Part of integrated, multidisciplinary design teams I was responsible for the delivery of mechanical and electrical systems servicing commercial and corporate office developments, cultural, leisure and institutional buildings, schools and colleges.
I practiced as a Senior and then Principal engineer on a range of projects including a museum and gallery, university library, industrial research laboratories and engine test facilities and a large corporate UK headquarters. As part of multidisciplinary design teams I was responsible for the delivery of mechanical and electrical specifications, drawings and contracts, site supervision and handover.
After graduating with a degree in architecture I took up a full-time position with Buro Happold working as an Engineer preparing detailed designs including drawings and specifications. To support this move to engineering I followed a 3 year part-time HNC course at Bath College studying Building Services Engineering, after which I successfully completed CIBSE Associate Member examinations. I took an early interest in computer based analysis and was an early adopter and leader in the implementation of industry standard software tools.
Between 1979 and 1984 I studies Architecture at Bath University. During that time I took placements at a number of small architectural practices and with Buro Happold in Bath.
