Professor of Wind Energy Systems and Director of the TU Delft Wind Energy Institute

About

I have spent over 30 years in wind energy, primarily research, but with commercial experience in the wholesale trading of renewable energy. I have led a number of research projects funded by public bodies such as as the EPSRC, NERC, EU and UK governments departments. I have substantial university teaching experience in renewable energy including being the programme director for CREST's flagship MSc course in Renewable Energy Systems Technology and providing wind power short courses. In addition to my present university research activity I have also provided consultancy in wind energy through LUEL. Presently I am the director of the TU Delft Wind Energy Institute (DUWIND) which is one of TU Delft's flagship research centres coordinating wind energy research across the university faculties. My aspirations are to continue in wind energy research and consultancy, to inspire future generations of students to take up a career in renewable energy and to provide advice and expertise to both the public and private sectors.

Experience

  • Professor of Wind Energy at Loughborough University
    Jun 2010 - May 2017 · 7 yrs

I worked within the Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology heading up the Wind and Water Power Research Team. My areas of research interest included: wind resource assessment in challenging environments, e.g. complex terrain, offshore and urban environments; condition monitoring of wind turbines; and climate change impacts on both wind power and the electricity supply industry in general. I was a member of several prominent bodies and committees in the wind and renewable energy arena including the Research Advisory Group of the Offshore Catapult, the PEL/88/-/7 sub-committee: Design requirements for wind turbines (advising on IEC standards for wind turbines) and was a board member of the European Renewable Energy Research Centres Agency (Eurec). I jointly managed the research activity of the EPSRC Supergen Wind Hub consortium and led CREST's wind energy research activity in the European Academy for Wind Energy.
