About

Simon Schmidt is head of the Hygrothermics Department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP since the first half of 2019. In this function, he is responsible for the strategic orientation of the department and is building a strong, worldwide network of research partners and industrial customers. Prior to this position, he led the newly formed business area Climate Culture Building (CCB) at Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics. From 2011 to 2014 he was the deputy head of the Chair of Building Physics at the Technical University of Munich and coordinated the administrative and teaching activities. From 2015 till 2016 Mr. Schmidt addressed himself to the task of finalizing his dissertation, which he finished with remarkable success. In 2017, he transferred from the Technical University of Munich to the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP. Dr. Schmidt is a member of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) as well as the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA). Dr. Schmidt graduated from the Technical University of Munich, one of Germany’s and Europe´s leading technical Universities, as a German – educated Diplom Engineer in 2008. He obtained the certificate for teaching in higher education of the Bavarian Universities and advocated in national and international building physics media. Dr. Schmidt possesses excellent communication skills, is an excellent speaker and speaks German as well as English fluently.

The challenges today are manifold: Besides saving energy, the aim is to meet growing hygiene and comfort requirements, as well as to focus more on the use of renewable energies and raw materials. Demands are also rising when it comes to damage prevention and the service life of building products. For planners and contractors, this means new challenges that cannot be mastered without in-depth knowledge of hygrothermal processes. Analysing the thermal and moisture properties of building materials, building components and entire building complexes - the basis for designing new buildings and renovation projects in an optimized and needs-based way is the core focus of my department. This includes ventilation systems and their interaction with the building envelope, as well as the influence of other hygrothermal storage masses. Thanks to our long-standing practical experience and extensive network, not only helps you to work on and solve your specific problem, but also to innovate new products and launch them on the market.
