Open minded, collaborative and very inquisitive, I add value through bringing diverse mind-sets together in teams, inspiring them to deliver results against difficult aims. Leveraging a broad experience base in programme leadership, operations, engineering and latterly digital solutions, I am passionate about meshing process and technology together to attain demonstrable improvements and real, tangible benefits. An adept, agile programme leader, I am sensitive to the needs of others, but will also drive them to succeed through thinking differently and bigger. Accepting the breadth of views through including and inspiring diversity in teams, I thrive on different perspectives and the energy and occasional (managed) disruption that brings; it is essential to solving all but the simplest of problems. I add value by using this analysis and a systems mind-set to find patterns in complexity, defining practical, deliverable solutions and then delivering through leadership change until it is properly done. The future is undertaking this change within a new, digital context and I am especially well equipped to map a course through this fourth generation of the industrial revolution. It matches well my strategic vision, operational experience, desire to drive benefit for the end-user, and technical bent. My wife and I have been completely renovated our home by the sea, which has allowed us to install green technology. I enjoy skiing, watching Rugby and am a Freeman of the City of London
Created a technical roadmap to revolutionise the assessment and management of the RN's operational capability, gaining enthusiastic approval from the Naval Digital Board, I have commenced delivery through an Agile team utilising Government Digital Service standards. The experience has opened my eyes to a potential future direction of travel in my career.
Delivering a range of technical and programme assurance services to the Royal Navy, I lead an expert team of circa 150 (military and civilian) assurors, surveyors, mechanical and complex systems engineers as well as data analysts and scientists, we provide programme management and equipment performance evaluation and insights used by SROs, commercial officers and safety regulators to assess the delivery of some of the world’s most complex equipment projects. I am proud that throughout the pandemic we were able to develop solutions to allow us to deliver nearly 95% of the output pre-pandemic and meet over 98% of our customers’ requirements.
Support Director and Chief Engineer to the Portsmouth Flotilla (circa 50 ships), I was responsible for ensuring ships were available for operations. Utilising a range of engineers and supply chain professionals onboard the vessels and in short side organisations, as well as portfolio agreements in our main operating bases at home and abroad, I enjoyed the cut and thrust of managing relationships, programmes and people to deliver against a complex, strategic backdrop.
I joined the programme to build the new aircraft carriers with just a small section of the first ship built and a team of 10. I enjoyed handing over 700 sailors expert on this wholly new vessel to the first seagoing Captain. While I was a member of the Manufacturing Project Leadership Team, my specific role was to utilise the new technology to bring about operational change onboard through devising new operational processes and procedures, evaluating new support methodologies and ensuring the team were trained.
Head of the Navy's Weapon Engineering Branch at Sea, my tenure was marked by setting up and chairing commissions into cyber security and radar performance. I was a prominent member of the team that transformed the generation of maritime forces through a complete organisational and policy overhaul.
