Dr. Shaun Duke is an Assistant Professor of Digital Rhetoric and Writing at Bemidji State University. He received his M.A. and Ph.D in English from the University of Florida and a B.A. in Modern Literature from University of California, Santa Cruz. He studies science fiction, postcolonialism, Caribbean literature, spatial theory, fan cultures, and social media. In addition to his academic work, he is a writer of genre fiction and a freelance editor at The Duke of Editing. His fiction has appeared in Curiouser Magazine, Stupefying Stories, and elsewhere. He also hosts and produces two podcasts: The Skiffy and Fanty Show, a four-time Hugo Award finalist podcast dedicated to examining the literary, cinematic, and cultural world of science fiction, fantasy, and horror; and The Joy Factory Monthly, a geeky podcast dedicated to joyful conversations about nerd topics. His podcast work has sent him around the world to participate in conventions, conduct interviews, and more.
Full-time instructor in English teaching composition, literature, and humanities courses, including Introduction to Literature, Science Fiction, Encounters in the Humanities, and Comp I and II.
AlphabetStreams is a streaming and video game and commentary content channel covering tabletop roleplaying games (playing and discussion), science fiction, fantasy, and horror media and culture, video games (playing and discussion), and streaming of The Skiffy and Fanty Show live broadcasts. Its production involves managing media via Open Broadcaster Software, brand and image design via Canva, video editing and post-production via DaVinci Resolve, and social media management.
The Skiffy and Fanty Show is a weekly podcast run by Shaun Duke and Jen Zink, two science fiction and fantasy nuts. Totally Pretentious is a movie discussion podcast hosted by two movie dorks who would rather spend their weekends watching and talking about movies than taking out the garbage or just about any other mundane task. Of course, dorks though we may be, we’re still of the mindset that there are far too many great films that never get the awards recognition they deserve. Each month, we discuss one feature film, exploring its historical context, themes, legacy, and/or its artsy-ness.
