San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain
In 2005 I was graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of La Laguna (ULL). During 2007-2011, I did the Residency in Clinical Biochemistry at the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla. In 2012 I joined the ULL Medical Sciences Doctorate Program, integrated in the Chronic Kidney Disease and Transplantation Group. During 2013-15 I was part of the Canary Islands Biomedical Research Center under the IMBRAIN project (FP7-REGPOT-2012) where I developed a pharmacokinetic method to measure renal function by the plasma clearance of iohexol. Then, we created the Renal Function Laboratory of the ULL. In 2016 I obtained the Rio Hortega Contract from the Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII), performing the clinical-research activity at the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), where we created a protocol to measure renal function in the clinics. Then, we took a further step simplifying the measurement of renal function by dried blood spot (iohexol-DBS), in order to spread its use in the medical community. This method was immediately applied in the clinics, collaborating with different national and international centers. This work was the basis of my PhD with International Mention, making a 3-month stay at the Mario Negri Institute, entitled "Plasma clearance of iohexol simplified by dried blood spot testing" that I read in 2017 with cum laude qualification and Extraordinary Thesis Award. In 2019, I obtained the Juan Rodés Contract from ISCIII by the Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz. I have obtained 3 projects as Principal Investigator of the Fondo de Investigación Sanitaria of the ISCIII entitled "Identification of rapid progressors towards chronic kidney disease in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: the role of measured glomerular filtration rate" (PI19/01220) funded with 99.220€; “Rol de a función renal medida en pre-diálisis. Hacia la Medicina de Precisión” (PI22/01086) funded with 68.970€; "Cohorte Española de Salud Renal: Proyecto Mulagua" (PI23/01948) funded with 255.000€. In 2023 I joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC) as a Clinical Biochemist specialized in Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. I am part of the Proyecto de Investigación de Medicina Personalizada (PERTE) entitled "Red Nacional de Laboratorios de Función Renal”(PMP22/00119) funded with 1.329.900€, and Proyecto Horizon Europe (HORIZON) entitled "Diabetes, obesity and the Kidney (DOKI)" (101079207), funded with 1.457.000€. I have published 33 research papers in journals with impact factor.
