About

Seven years of graduate study (four different graduate programs). B.A., English, UC Riverside. My graduate Creative Writing portfolio includes a picaresque novel and 14 selected poems. Additional studies have been in film narrative, media theory, and epic poetry. With a graduate degree in the Humanities, and with a literary emphasis, I have been intrigued by the human experience in literature and human condition from various historical perspectives. Hence, much of my learning has been in studying not only the novel and prose fiction but autobiography and memoir as well. In addition, I have direct experience working in labor environments -- in various supervisory capacities and in management -- from dispatch to maintenance. In gradually making college a priority, I worked graveyard shifts when required courses were not offered online. My first A.A. degree is in Radio & TV Broadcasting. Since then, my Humanities studies have become more interdisciplinary, and my most recent studies have been in Anthropology. In studying Cultural Anthropology, we learn that not being able to obtain social capital, such as education, is oftentimes a result of intergenerational poverty, written of in instances of farm life. And a narrative that is picaresque is often on the road. Limited social mobility I found intriguing because I had worked 70+ hours per week in salaried capacities. And, to eventually return to college, I would work graveyard shifts five years. Such areas influenced the first chapters of my contemporary novel All Four Knot, started at CSUSB and continued at Dominican University of California. During my years of graduate study at Dominican, and commuting three hours each way, I wrote essays on Friedrich Engels and Mary Shelley. These famous authors were among the 19th-century British authors studied in the Dominican graduate seminar British Literature in Context. Engels, a socialist, had written The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844. Shelley had written Frankenstein (1818), a Gothic novel that, in essence, becomes a critique of the Industrial Revolution. An assemblage of body parts may also refer to a body politic. Consistent with a metaphorical governing body, my experience pertains to the value of cooperation, with democracy and productive forces leading to a more sustainable future.
