My role as a Chamber Officer consisted of assisting MPs and the Clerk of the House while the House was sitting, ensuring they had the resources and assistance they needed for Parliament to run smoothly. Aside from general customer service duties, my tasks included tabling documents, supporting communication between the Clerk and the House Office, and supporting communication between MPs and their staff. Complemented by my experience in other areas of the Office of the Clerk including Hansard and Select Committees, this role has afforded me a robust and comprehensive understanding of public law, public policy, and the parliamentary process in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Proofreading the content and headnotes of cases for the New Zealand Law Reports, checking for compliance with the NZ Law Style Guide and making suggestions on general grammar and prose.
During this internship I completed a number of projects involving climate adaptation, working across both the Governance & Performance and Delivery & Operations teams. My pieces of work included coordinating cross-agency reporting to the Climate Change Chief Executives Board on the progress of the National Adaptation Plan and Emissions Reduction Plan; designing an evidence resource structured on key themes to assist adaptation teams in policy development and research; and helping to plan a strategy for engagement with iwi/hapū and PSGEs for the second Emissions Reduction Plan.
My contract as a Summer Intern for the EPA was extended to November 2023. I continued to work on complex projects that I began over the summer relating to assessing compliance with environmental legislation and regulations, including the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act and the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Act.
Working for the Compliance, Monitoring and Enforcement (CME) team at the EPA. This role was part of the Summer Intern programme, which was a fantastic opportunity to further my understanding of environmental law in Aotearoa New Zealand. I gained experience liaising with stakeholders and officials, assessing compliance against environmental regulations and legislation, evidence gathering for cases, and advising my team on recommended compliance outcomes.
