As a veterinarian and Diplomate of the American College of Animal Welfare with a strong interest in aquatic animal health and welfare, I strive improve the treatment of animals through research, advocacy, and education in my role as an Aquatic Animal Veterinarian for Nautilus Collaboration. I completed my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at The Ohio State University in 2017. To improve my clinical reasoning and clinical skills, I completed a small animal internship in 2018 at East Bay Veterinary Specialists in Walnut Creek, California where I learned ultrasound skills, had primary case responsibility for urgent care patients, and was primary surgeon for patients with financial constraints (including an enterotomy, gastrotomy, pyometra and multiple routine ovariohysterectomies). I earned my PhD from the University of Florida in May 2023 to improve my research, project management, and data analysis skills. My dissertation research focused on the response of common sea stars (Asterias rubens) to environmental stressors using a variety of readily available diagnostics and advanced molecular techniques on coelomic fluid as well as histology on body wall biopsies. This work helps advance One Welfare - the understanding that environmental health, animal welfare, and human well-being are connected - by improving our knowledge of how sea stars handle environmental stressors. During my PhD, I recognized the importance of communication and earned a graduate certificate in Environmental Education and Communication.
