Freelance Hairdressing; Bridal Hair, Gents, Hair Extensions, Colouring, and Cutting. I also got involved in events such as working with the Women's Institute in Hull, demonstrating looks to show the ladies how to recreate their salon looks at home. I kept myself upto date with current trends, and visited Pro Hair Live, and Salon International on a yearly basis. Member of the HABIA group.
I applied to the prison service and passed all entry examinations, role plays including fitness and medical testing. Although I didn't peruse this as a career it was a beneficial life experience. It allowed me to see opportunity and also clarified that my love was for the hairdressing industry. The rigorous testing that I had to go through was a great experience and allowed me to to show skills in dangerous scenarios, knowledge in negotiation, be structured and disciplined in personal manner whilst holding a professional image. Although this was nothing to do with my current skill set, it gave me a huge confidence boost to set myself new goals and life achievements.
Headhunted by a local company to help them set up and run a Hairdressing Salon in Hull City Centre. I was responsible for the recruitment of staff both employed, and self employed, along with choosing a colour manufacturer and salon retail. Training staff members, stock control, accounts, and making sure the salon was marketed well. I was also running a full column of clients.
I started at this salon as a senior stylist, and within months was promoted to Manager at the age of 19. Managing a City Centre salon over two levels in a shopping centre, was certainly a challenge but the support of the staff, and a management course that I did in my own time at The Open University helped me along the way. I ran a successful column of clientele, along with managing 10 staff members, and the responsibility of training 3 apprentice stylists. I was responsible for stock control, salon bookings, promotions, social media, advertising, training evenings, staff hours and holidays. I was also the authorizing body for the fire/health and safety checks that had to be done on a weekly basis to comply with the shopping centre regulations, and attend managers meetings with all of the retailers to discuss the previous months business, and how we can help each other move business and productivity forward.
