(ENG) Sarah Moeremans (Ghent, 1979) is Artistic Director & CEO of Het Zuidelijk Toneel, one of the leading theatre companies in the Netherlands. She combines a distinctive artistic vision with strategic leadership, translating artistic and societal challenges into clear direction and sustainable development. By connecting vision and practice, she builds organizations where artistic innovation, social relevance, and audience engagement reinforce one another. Alongside her leadership role, Sarah is a theatre director, performer, and visual creator. She trained at Studio Herman Teirlinck in Antwerp and studied directing at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. She founded the theatre collective Moeremans&Sons and was Resident Director at Noord Nederlands Toneel and Toneelgroep Oostpool, where she was also part of the artistic team. Since 2023, she has led Het Zuidelijk Toneel. Together with writer and dramaturg Joachim Robbrecht, she reimagines classical repertoire for contemporary audiences. Their work includes the Crashtest Ibsen series, radical adaptations of Ibsen’s plays presented at festivals such as Oerol and in theatres across the Netherlands and Belgium. With a deep love for the theatrical canon and an urge to continually break it open, they create performances infused with humour, satire, and social friction. Zij vertaalt artistieke en maatschappelijke vraagstukken naar een heldere koers en duurzame ontwikkeling. Door visie en praktijk te verbinden, bouwt zij aan organisaties waarin artistieke innovatie, maatschappelijke relevantie en publieksverbreding samenkomen. Daarnaast is Sarah regisseur, acteur en vormgever. Ze studeerde aan Studio Herman Teirlinck en de Regieopleiding van de Theaterschool Amsterdam. Ze richtte het collectief Moeremans&Sons op en was huisregisseur bij Noord Nederlands Toneel en Toneelgroep Oostpool, waar zij tevens deel uitmaakte van de artistieke staf. Sinds 2023 geeft zij leiding aan Het Zuidelijk Toneel. Samen met schrijver en dramaturg Joachim Robbrecht herijkt zij klassiek repertoire voor een hedendaags publiek. Hun werk omvat onder meer de Crashtest Ibsen-reeks: radicale bewerkingen van Ibsens klassiekers, gespeeld op festivals als Oerol en in theaters in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Met liefde voor het repertoire én de behoefte om het telkens opnieuw open te breken, maken zij voorstellingen vol humor, satire en maatschappelijk ongemak.

Heb je je weleens afgevraagd waarom alle sprookjes eindigen met ‘en ze leefden nog lang en gelukkig’? Wat er gebeurt als kwaad het wint van goed, de prinses niet wakker wordt, of de prinses de prins redt in plaats van andersom? Iconische sprookjes en legendes doen al eeuwen de ronde. We lezen ze voor aan onze kinderen, maar denken we nog wel na over wat de verhalen écht betekenen? Bambi is na Robin Hood het tweede deel in de theaterreeks What’s in a fairytale?! waarin oeroude verhalen met nieuwe ogen worden bekeken. Gooi al je vooroordelen overboord en maak je op voor een grootse satire waarin de jacht op deze ogenschijnlijk onschuldige verhalen op humorvolle wijze wordt geopend. Romantiek van de onschuld In 1923 schreef de Oostenrijkse schrijver Felix Salten zijn roman Bambi, een leven in het woud. Bambi groeit op, the hard way: de jager schiet zijn moeder dood. Of je nu het boek leest of de Disney-film ziet, het is misschien wel het zieligste verhaal ooit; een lief klein hertje zonder mama. Regisseur Sarah Moeremans en schrijver Joachim Robbrecht vragen zich in Bambi af waarom dat zo zielig is? Willen we liever slachtoffer zijn dan dader? Het Bambi-verhaal geeft hen aanleiding om de ogenschijnlijk natuurlijke verdeling tussen daders en slachtoffers binnenste buiten te keren. Want was Bambi eigenlijk wel zo zielig? Bambi zelf geeft het antwoord. In deze voorstelling zie je het eens zo onschuldige hertje zoals je hem nooit eerder zag: als regisseur van zijn eigen verhaal. Het echte verhaal.
