Rudolf Heer graduated from the HTBL u. VA St. Pölten in the field of communications engineering and electronics and finished in 1987 with the Matura. In 1988 he started his studies of electrical engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. The diploma thesis at the Institute for Quantum Electronics and Laser Technology enabled him to deepen his knowledge in areas of laser physics and to complete his diploma studies in 1996. The subsequent doctoral studies at the TU Vienna were carried out by him at the Institute for Solid State Electronics. The main focus was on semiconductor and low temperature physics using scanning tunneling microscopy. During his doctoral studies he started working as a university assistant with corresponding teaching activities. After finishing his doctoral studies (summa cum laude) in 2000 he changed to the industry. His first focus was the system integration of high-frequency front-end modules used in mobile communications. In 2004 he was appointed to establish and lead the Nanocomponents Research group at the Austrian Institute of Technology. The focus of his current scientific work at Silicon Austria Labs is on the fabrication and characterization of nanoscale devices and the measurement of very small electrical and magnetic signals.
