About

Over 10 years of experience in multiphysics and modeling. I have a broad engineering interest and worked on a large variety of engineering applications such as MEMS, antenna arrays, RF transceivers, RF hyperthermia antenna design, and EMC. My current research involves the application of electromagnetic waves for medical applications. I have interest in the biological effects of electromagnetic fields. Specific focus on modeling, characterization and optimization for hyperthermia and neurostimulation. I am an experienced and enthusiastic teacher and I have taught and designed courses at undergraduate and graduate level. Also, I supervised 20+ students for internships and master projects. In addition, I have several years of experience in education management. Specialties: electromagnetic fields, multiphysics modeling, medical applications, neurostimulation, hyperthermia, antenna design, phased arrays, EMC, MEMS, nonlinear dynamics and control.

Experience

  • Eindhoven University of Technology (Eindhoven Area, Netherlands)
    • Assistant Professor
      Jan 2012 - Present · 14 yrs 6 mos

Researcher ♦ Skilled teacher ♦ Supervisor Research on electromagnetics for medical applications: - Multiphysics modeling and model reduction for deep hyperthermia. Optimization and control for focused energy deposition during treatments. - Electromagnetic field modeling for neurostimulation, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). - Investigation of mechanisms of action in neurostimulation. Specific interest in means of excitation/stimulus, spectral content. - Low-frequency applications for medical diagnosis, e.g. wireless detection system for feeding tube in pre-term born infants. Involvement of and joint work with (academic) clinical partners ensures clinical relevance of the work Other research topics: - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for automotive applications: thin wire modeling, computational electromagnetics.

    • Education Program Coordinator
      Jan 2012 - Sep 2015 · 3 yrs 9 mos

Curriculum design ♦ Program implementation ♦ Education management Educational management task in which I coordinated and managed the Bachelor Automotive program of the faculty of Electrical Engineering. I contributed to the development and implementation of the curriculum with respect to its content. Also I ensured the connection between the individual courses along the disciplines in the program, while continuously contributing to the didactic improvement.

    • PostDoc
      Jul 2009 - Dec 2011 · 2 yrs 6 mos

In the PANAMA (Power Amplifiers aNd Antennas for Mobile Applications) project within the European CATRENE framework PANAMA I investigated approaches for antenna beam steering by means of RF-MEMS technology and phased arrays.

  • Committee on Electromagnetic Fields at Gezondheidsraad
    Feb 2017 - Present · 9 yrs 5 mos

Member in the committee on electromagnetic fields of the Health Council of the Netherlands, an Independent scientific advisory body for government and parliament. The task of this committee is to closely follow scientific developments, periodically report on these developments and reply to requests for advice.

  • Visiting Researcher at Kempenhaeghe
    Jan 2019 - Jan 2022 · 3 yrs 1 mo

Research visit (1 day per week) at Kempenhaeghe to strengthen cooperation on the PerStim project.

  • IEEE Benelux Section Secretary at IEEE
    Feb 2019 - Jan 2021 · 2 yrs

  • Visiting Researcher at NXP Semiconductors, Caen, France
    Jan 2011 - Jul 2011 · 7 mos

Visiting researcher for an exchange in the European IAPP project entitled Partnership for the Development of Cognitive Radio (PAR4CR). I looked into the application of multi-antenna techniques (beamforming, MIMO) for software defined radio (SDR) and cognitive radio (CR) and the implications of these techniques for transceiver architectures.
