Robert F. Smith is an investor and philanthropist. Smith’s career reflects a blend of technical expertise and strategic vision. While still in high school, he was accepted into a collegiate-level internship at Bell Labs, which he continued throughout college. After earning a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1985, he worked as an engineer before transitioning to finance after earning an MBA from Columbia Business School. He began his finance career at Goldman Sachs, where he gained extensive experience in investment banking. In 2000, he founded Vista Equity Partners (Vista). Vista is a leading global investment firm that aims to deliver compelling, consistent results and unlock potential for our investors, people and companies. Beyond his work at Vista, Smith champions initiatives that expand access to opportunity and empower others. In 2017, he became the first Black American to sign the Giving Pledge, committing to dedicating more than half of his net worth in charitable projects that will ensure a better future for all. He is the founding director and President of Fund II Foundation, supporting the Black American experience and human rights. He co-leads Southern Communities Initiative (SCI), an impact initiative harnessing the collective power of partnerships, technology and community to accelerate wealth creation and economic opportunity in underinvested communities and businesses across the South. Smith is also the chairman of Student Freedom Initiative (SFI). SFI is a nonprofit that aims to alleviate the burden of student loan debt for students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). Smith has been recognized for his contributions to business, technology and society, including the George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award, the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy and TIME100’s “Most Influential People in Philanthropy” of 2025. Forbes also named him one of the “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” for his innovative approach to software investing.
Smith is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, a leading global investment firm. He directs the firm’s investment strategy and oversees the transactions of its portfolio of enterprise software companies.
Smith joined Goldman Sachs in 1994. In his position as Co-Head of Enterprise Systems and Storage, Smith managed merger and acquisition activity with companies including Apple, Microsoft and Yahoo.
Smith started working at Kraft Foods in 1990 as a Technical Manager. During his tenure at Kraft Foods, he was granted several patents, including two in the U.S. and two in Europe.
Smith began his career as an Engineer at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in 1986.
While in high school, Smith’s first professional experience was as an engineering intern at Bell Labs.
