Bournemouth, England, United Kingdom
As Director of Medical & Performance at AFC Bournemouth, I lead and align all areas of athlete health and performance across the club — integrating sports medicine, sports science, nutrition, recovery, and psychological support. My goal is to build a connected, evidence-driven, and human-centred performance culture, where health, resilience, and performance are seen as one system. Before joining Bournemouth, I served as Team Doctor at RasenBallsport Leipzig (2018–2025), becoming the first full-time team doctor in the German Bundesliga. There, I embedded the principles of Salutogenesis — focusing on health creation rather than disease management — into the daily work of elite football. My years with Leipzig coincided with a period of remarkable growth and success for the club, including winning the German DFB Cup twice and the German Supercup once, as well as reaching the semifinals of both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League — experiences that provided invaluable insight into building integrated performance systems at the highest level of European football. Earlier, I co-founded the UKE Athleticum at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, one of Germany’s leading centres for sports and movement medicine, and led the medical department of the HSV Youth Academy, where I introduced full-body movement analysis as a preventive and rehabilitative screening tool. My current professional interests include 4P Medicine (Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, Participatory), longevity, micronutrient research, prehabilitation, and regenerative & physical medicine. As a Visiting Scientist at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, my research focuses on preventive player care, including concussion management and advanced imaging in elite sport. Clinically, I describe my approach as Holistic Sports Medicine — integrating conventional medicine, manual and fascia therapy, TCM, neural and micronutrient therapy, and applied sports science into one system of care. My work also extends to advising innovative start-ups and research groups, translating scientific insights into practical applications for performance, recovery, and longevity. I have been a keynote speaker at international congresses in Germany, China, South Africa, the USA, and Russia, and am author of multiple book chapters and a dedicated volume on creatine in human health. ✨ To stay updated on new insights and publications, click the 🔔 bell on my profile.
