A Quantity Surveyor with over 20 years of experience in construction, including 10 years with Kier Group (or associated JV partnerships). In that time I've worked in various roles on a number of diverse projects, including mining, hospitality, heavy industrial, oil/gas/energy, marine civil, civil infrastructure and building projects based on various contract forms. I've also had the privilege of working with multi-national teams in Jamaica and other Caribbean Islands. One of my main achievements in that time has been the building of good working relationships with my employers, project team members, clients and their consultants..
Providing Quantity Surveying services to select contractors and subcontractors, from pre-contract to post-contract stages. In this role, not only have I continued to perform similar tasks to those I did at Kier Group (see experience below), but have learned additional skills related to project management, procurement, and project development. Now looking to focus my skills in commercial / quantity surveying roles.
Taking projects from tender handover, procurement of subcontractors and major suppliers, setting up and carrying out monthly cost value reporting and forecasts, cash flow management, preparation of interim applications, measurement and pricing of variations (change order management), preparing claims for EoT, administration of subcontracts, through to close out and negotiation of final accounts. Worked on projects in Hospitality, Mining, Heavy Industrial, Oil/Gas/Energy sectors, and Civil Infrastructure projects, such as roads, bridges, and wastewater treatment plants, together with a few commercial building projects.
I was the Project QS on a demolition contract at Carib Cement for approximately 6 months, when the Project Manager had to leave suddenly. In the days thereafter, both the site team and the Client directed their requests and queries to me. The biggest difference between QS duties and PM duties in my opinion is decision making. Stepping away from the usual running of numbers to actually making decisions, giving instructions, agreeing methods was a big change. More responsibility and accountability go with the position, which was bit intimidating at first, but really helped me to grow. The position required me to ensure that the project team had the resources necessary to complete their respective duties in a safe and efficient manner.
At this PQS Firm, I was involved in both pre- and post-contract stages of projects. I did quantity take-off's, BQ preparation, estimating, and was involved in the payment application process for a number of new-build schools.
