I spent 19 years as General Counsel and Company Secretary at British Energy Group spanning the establishment of Scottish Nuclear in 1990, the privatisation of British Energy in 1996, the building of Amergen in the US and Bruce Power in Ontario, the restructuring of British Energy between 2002-2005, its reflotation and turnaround leading to the sale of the business in 2009 to EDF SA for £12.5bn. In 2009-10 I led the team selling EDF Energy's UK Electricity Distribution business for £5.9bn, Since 2010 I have worked with GowlingWLG, the international law firm, as Senior Counsel concentrating on nuclear law and energy projects . I sit on the advisory board for the Accountant in Bankruptcy , a Scottish Government agency and as a director of Opportuneo Ltd, an energy sector consultancy. I chair a number of rooftop solar and run of river hydro generation companies. Formerly I was Chair of Brockwell Energy Group, Eneus Energy, Smarter Grid Solutions, Nuclear Liabilities Financing Assurance Board and SCDI ( now Prosper) ;Deputy Chair of NuGen and Albion Community Power; and Director of the Oil & Gas Authority ( now NSTA) and the Nuclear Liabilities Fund.
