Experienced executive and board advisor. I have worked with Fortune 500, Family Owned Enterprises, Universities and Government as chairman, board member, facilitator, coach and change & leadership expert and have been a (non-)executive for more than 30 years. My lessons learned: 1. Purpose driven companies are rare, because they still believe in the shareholder as primary stakeholder. Most businesses lack a center purpose, find its measurement a challeng so default to prioritizing for financial results. Purpose answers the societal relevance question: why it a good idea that this company existst? And for whom? 2. If people are referred to as 'resources', organizations are often mechanistic, not human centered. A focus on matter over meaning, measurable results over positive contributions build machines, not teams. Compliance & control are 'safety-nets' that should support engagement & trust. As long as transactional management logic dominates, high performance is out of reach. 3. Excellence is about congruence: concinnity of story, style & substance. Congruence, not applying double standards is fundamental to building a robust identity, a world class brand, a high performance culture. 4. Embracing paradox is essential for handling complexity Fundamental truths are typically paradoxical. Handling ambiguity requires dialogue and experimentation. Executives are often afraid dialogues end up in compromise and take too much time. The lopsided decisions they take as a consequence destroy value. 5. Boards typically suffer from conventional logic: - people don’t like change (they need it!) -what gets measured, gets done (too simple), -what can’t be measured is not worth knowing (a fallacy!) -businesses exist to make money (money is the means, not the goal)- high performance requires high rewards (not rewards, intrinsic motivation) I enjoy turning -barely- acceptable into high performance and combining innovation with operational excellence.
