Leeds, England, United Kingdom
My name is Rishabh Suvarna, a 4th Year Medical Student from the University of Leeds and current EXSEL (Excellence in Scholarship, Enterprise and Leadership) Undergraduate Research Scholar with a passion for neurosciences, oncology, data science and surgical technologies. I have expertise in using RStudio, STATA, SPSS, and Scilab for scientific data analysis, and programming with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. My research experience spans Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses, Scoping Reviews, retrospective single- and multi-centre cohort studies, case series, audits, service evaluations, case reports, and literature reviews, with work published in peer-reviewed journals including The Lancet eClinicalMedicine and the Journal of Neurosurgery. I’ve presented at prestigious regional, national, and international conferences, including the Royal Society of Medicine, the UK Neurointerventional Group, and the British Society of Neuroradiology. Alongside research, I actively serve in leadership roles, including as a Vice Chair for NANSIG (the UK’s national Neurology and Neurosurgery Interest Group in collaboration with the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and the Association of British Neurologists). I'm especially passionate about promoting engagement in clinical neurosciences and neuro-oncology. I'm always keen to develop my research skills further and connect with clinicians, data scientists, and researchers of different disciplines. If you're aware of any research opportunities aligned with my interests and experience, I’d really appreciate hearing from you.
Chair of the Media Team at NANSIG, with the aim of expanding our outreach across the UK and beyond. As Vice-Chair Creative Director, I strive to inspire the next generation of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists by coordinating a skilled team of designers to champion all NANSIG initiatives.
Regional Lead (University Representative) for the UK’s National Neurology and Neurosurgery Special Interest Group (NANSIG) for Leeds. NANSIG is a student-led national society in partnership with the ABN (Association of British Neurologists) and SBNS (Society of British Neurosurgeons), with the hopes of connecting medical students with professionals in neurology and neurosurgery. As Regional Lead, I aim to inspire an interest in the neurosciences from students regardless of their background by helping to market events, research opportunities and mentorship schemes that NANSIG is currently running and broaden student views on the field of neuroscience. I also act as the bridge between NANSIG, an international network, and regional societies such as BrainLeeds to help facilitate collaboration opportunities.
Student Researcher under Neurosurgery Department on a 10-year Retrospective Review on Surgical Outcomes of Brain Metastasis. Funded by the undergraduate EXSEL scholarship, awarded by the School of Medicine.
Working with Neuroradiology Department on a retrospective case series investigating the long term efficacy of endovascular flow diverting devices such as CONTOUR Cerus Neurovascular System in treating cerebral aneurysms. Delivered oral presentations at BSNR 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting, Bristol and 68th Annual UKNG Winter Meeting, Oxford.
Student internship working under the Stem Cell and Brain Tumour Group, helping to characterise the behaviour of residual high grade glioma cells following gold standard treatment (surgical resection plus chemoradiotherapy). Performed spatial clustering analysis of T-cell distributions in primary versus recurrent GBM using RStudio and Python.
One of the leaders in the conference committee helping to plan the BrainLeeds 2024 national programme, involving teaching series, workshops and conferences. Liaising between different neurology/neurosurgery societies across the country and coordinating between different speakers.
In charge of conceptualising, developing and updating the website for BrainLeeds, using HTML, CSS, Javascript and JQuery. This is with the aim of expanding the outreach of BrainLeeds and encouraging more local engagement from medical students at our events.
Overseeing all society activities, putting forth new ideas to grow and expand Leeds Oncology Society whilst setting up collaborations with other medical student societies at Leeds and nearby universities.
