25 years’ experience in South Africa’s geological and mining industries and is a Vice President of the Minerals Council of South Africa, Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa and a Registered Natural Scientist. He joined the Group in 2014, and has contributed significantly to a successful and value-accretive acquisition and growth strategy. Prior to joining Sibanye-Stillwater, he served on the Gold One Executive Committee from 2009, where his last appointment was Executive Vice President: Technical Services. Prior to this Richard served as CEO of Goliath Gold Limited, held management positions at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Mining Technology division, Dunrose Trading 186 Proprietary Limited trading as Shango Solutions and Uranium One, and was an investment consultant for African Global Capital Proprietary Limited.
A Group Executive and C-suite Member, responsible for the Groups African Operating Region and Group PGM Business Champion. Regional oversight for all aspects of our African operations includes health and safety, operational delivery and strategy for 1 Moz Gold business and 1.8 Moz PGM business, setting and delivering ESG strategic objectives, regional stakeholder relations as well as sales, marketing and market development. In addition the responsibility includes the regions growth and portfolio optimisation including Capital projects, identification and execution on external growth opportunities, development and alignment of non-managed regional subsidiary companies, JV’s and partnerships and setting strategic objectives for the Groups 3.0 m oz PGM business to ensure global competitiveness and development in line with market requirements. Direct reports include the Regional Executive Committee including Safety and Health, Operational Leads for African operating businesses, Commercial Services, Sustainability and Stakeholder Engagement, Technical Services including business development, Protection Services (Security), Human Resources, Marketing and Sales.
Goliath Gold was an exploration company with gold exploration assets in Southern Africa. The Company was a publicly listed subsidiary of Gold One and formed through the reverse acquisition of White Waters Exploration. Goliath Gold was listed on the Johannesburg Stock exchange.
Executive position overseeing technical services and mergers and acquisitions. Technical team provided oversight and technical support to the development of the Modder East Gold Operation from a Greenfields project to a steady state operation (130,000 oz’s of gold production per annum) and managed the Groups exploration projects. During this period the Company grew through external acquisitive growth including the acquisition of the Rand Uranium operations from a Private Equity Fund for $250m, the Ezulwini operations from First Uranium (TSX listed) for $80m and ultimately sold the combined Rand Uranium and Ezulwini Operations to Sibanye Gold for ZAR2.5bn.
African Global Capital was a Private Equity Fund investing in mining and energy projects across Africa. The fund invested approximately US$1 billion. As an investment consultant I advised the Investment Committee on mining and exploration projects in Africa (South Africa, Niger, Namibia and Zimbabwe) through technical project evaluation, financial project valuation as well as managed investments in the existing portfolio.
Responsibilities included the oversight and reporting (Qualified Person) of resources and reserves (ASX, TSX and JSE) including compilation of press releases, press and analyst engagements, operational mineral resource management including annual mine planning and budgeting and the management of three exploration programs.
