I initially studied pharmacy in Wellington in New Zealand but immigrated to the UK in 1995 and started a career in hospital pharmacy. Although formally trained as a clinical pharmacist I have interest in electronic systems, processes and workflow management, and spend most of my working life in project work. I am based in Sutton in south London. I enjoy skiing and travel and speak a little Japanese!
My current role is with electronic prescribing. I am a key member of the team that is involved in the development of in-house software for the purpose of chemotherapy prescribing. I liaise directly with the developers with regards to the clinical requirements and business rules of the system along with presenting and reporting the the Board of Governors, commissioners and NHS England. The system has been successfully rolled out to almost all areas of haemato-oncology with ongoing (during 2017) to complete clinical trials in what is proving to be one of the most successful systems in the UK. Along with a colleague at the Christie Hospital in Manchester, I have created a chemotherapy dose banding system for chemotherapy drugs which has been adopted by the entire NHS England. This work has lead to collaboration and meetings at a national level with high-level managers within the NHS, groups such as the Royal College of Physicians, BOPA, UKONS, and third party suppliers and manufacturers. In May 2017 our work won the HSJ Award for Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation. Given my background I spent approximately 18 months covering the haematology pharmacist post where I attended ward rounds, covered ward clinical duties and went to national and international meetings and symposia. In addition to the above I have a keen interest in systems management and I am frequently involved in working on projects and issues which involve workflow and pathway problems.
A brief position covering ward clinical and haematology unit management duties in a busy general hospital. I left this position when the opportunity to work at the Royal Marsden arose.
Initially worked as a clinical pharmacist in the Host Defense Unit performing ward duties for paediatric haemato-oncology and transplant areas. I then managed the clinical implementation of an electronic chemotherapy prescribing software package including prescription template preparation, staff training and procedure preparation.
