An Amazing Technicolour Career Well it seems the Rolling Stones are not the only ones still able to celebrate 50 years in the showbiz world as Richard Loring, hardly a Rock’n Roller, but still a legendary sprightly performer recently took centre stage at the newly opened Richard’s Supper Stage in Sea Point, to celebrate 50 years on the local and international stages in aid of his most important charity the Theatre Benevolent Fund. Honing his vocal talents in the church choir from the early age of seven, Eisteddfods and classical ‘Lieder’ training gave Guernsey-born Loring, skills to be recognized at the age of 16 as a ‘Carol Levis Discovery’ – yesteryear’s ‘Idols’ winner. This culminated in 1962 with him flying to London to follow his dream to perform on international stages by joining the George Mitchell singers in the Ken Dodd Show in Manchester. Certainly not yet the West End or Broadway but even this,’ brash young guy’ as Richard describes himself , could have envisaged the world of entertainment that he was to encounter and has consumed his life for the past half century.
