I am a designer, director, video editor and consultant that creates moving and static images on screens of all sizes. I specialize in creating content for cultural institutions such as the V&A museum. I edit documentaries, create motion-graphics and provide creative direction. I have international experience with Broadcast Media, Cultural Projects, Documentaries, Experiential Design, Brand Identity Development, Advertising, Visual Effects and Live-action Direction. I can deliver concepts, creative direction and finished solutions. I create short form content for broadcast and digital media and can operate as a hybrid producer/editor or 'preditor'. My work is also channel neutral, meaning that I can create content for many platforms. I have worked in the UK, USA, Europe, Scandinavia and the Mid-East. I aspire to making imagery that engages the eyes and the mind as well as having a purposeful end. Coming up with concepts and seeing them through to successful completion has been a constant in my work. I was Head of Design at the US Documentary Channel from its start-up phase to acquisition, during an 8 year period that saw it reach over 25 million viewers. Working in the US has given me great insight into the global business world as well as a broad understanding of the American entertainment market. I can work on-set with crew and talent. I am also a draftsman, copywriter, photographer and creative thinker. I can write scripts, develop design briefs and can present and pitch work to clients and in-house departments. I can communicate and collaborate with people in a lead creative or consultancy role. My digital skill-set includes compositing, editing, sound-design and 3d animation, using the tools of the trade. I am excited by the new platforms emerging in the digital media landscape and opportunities that allow work to be seen everywhere. Having a range off skills to draw upon honed from many experiences, makes this world easier to adapt to and navigate.
Design, Direction and Creative Solutions for Brands, Broadcasters and Cultural Institutions. My business operates as a roving moving image design service. I create short-form video editing solutions and work as a consultant. I collaborate with filmmakers, cultural institutions and design companies. I create work which involves motiongraphics, video editing, experiential design and brand/identity development which can work in both static and dynamic applications. I originate ideas, visualize and execute finished solutions. I work as a director with live-action. I edit short form video for broadcast and online platforms. I create CG and 2D animation. I work with teams such as filmmakers, animators, videographers, musicians, curators and other creative people, to produce complete solutions. I originate visual collateral for traditional film and TV productions as well as online streaming platforms. I am particularly interested in digital work of a cultural nature, that can be seen in public spaces and environmental contexts. I think that having a hybrid skill set is a critical factor in the market place today, which accounts for the 'laundry list' of skills outlined here.
I was a founding member of the Documentary Channel, which launched in 2006 on the Dish Network. As the Design Director, I originated work that defined the look of the channel on air and online. I created branding solutions and logos. I also designed network IDs, promo packages, programming interstitials, collaborated on developing themed sub-brands, and originated collateral marketing materials for print and web campaigns. Working with the company from its start-up and through to its acquisition by Participant Media, provided me with valuable experience and insights into the multi-channel world. The means were modest but the opportunity immense.
I designed and originated Motion Graphics for US companies including a theatrical trailer for the 2002 Academy Awards; cultural projects for museums such as the Skirball Institute; and content graphics for Oscar winning documentary filmmakers.
I started my own Visual Effects/Design company at a time when the possibilities of digital effects were opening up exciting creative possibilities. This was one of the first companies that offered a hybrid production/post-production solution geared to the needs of advertising agencies, broadcasters and record companies. I directed award winning commercials for international ad agencies, music videos for top-ten artists and designed title sequences and content graphics for UK broadcasters. I also created content for BBC news and current affairs and regularly supplied graphics for BBC "Panorama" collaborating with the in-house design team.
I began my professional career at Quantel, the UK pioneer of digital post-producton tools for film and television. I worked with Quantel's customers in the UK and worldwide. My design skills were used to educate and promote Quantel's cutting-edge systems to TV graphics departments and boutique visual effects clients.
