• Undertaking freshwater ecosystem research in the Great Lakes Basin with special focus on Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOC) and the impact of environmental stressors on the recovery and function of fish populations and habitats • Performing fish habitat suitability modelling and statistical analyses • Providing scientific knowledge, data information, advice and recommendations to scientists and resource managers within the department and other federal and provincial regulatory agencies Major projects and contributions: • Dissolved Oxygen Tolerance Guilds of Great Lakes Fish Species for Fish Habitat Modelling in Hamilton Harbour • Long-Term Dissolved Oxygen Monitoring in Hamilton Harbour, Lake Ontario Great Lakes temperature and dissolved oxygen database • Support for Bay of Quinte Area of Concern Submergent Aquatic Vegetation Model Technical specializations: • Fish Habitat suitability modelling and trend analysis • Statistical and scientific graphic software (R, SAS, SPSS, Sigmaplot) • Advanced data organization and management with Microsoft Excel and Access • Knowledgeable in GIS applications (ArcGIS, Google Earth)
• Analyze and manage fish contaminant data from the Ontario Sport Fish contaminant monitoring program, provide research and support for various programs in the Environmental Monitoring and Reporting branch • Responsibilities include developing various experimental designs for existing data, managing and screening existing databases, preparing technical reports and scientific manuscripts including scientific figures, literature reviews, organize and manage inventory archives, preparing laboratory samples and providing support for field work Major projects and contributions: • Temporal trends of fish mercury in Ontario: a report from 35+ years of monitoring • Guide to Eating Ontario Sport Fish publication • Temporal trends of toxaphene levels and its congeners in fish of the Great Lakes • Lake Superior and St. Mary’s River Area of Concern Remedial Action Plan: Fish consumption advisory assessment report • Long-term Fish Contaminant tissue samples inventory and archiving project
• Spearheaded the Costa Rican historic fish identification project with Dr. Hernan Lopez-Fernandez • Responsibilities included identifying and archiving historic fish samples for museum collections from Costa Rica, documenting inventory, maintaining records and literature review for fish identification
• Facilitated the Ontario far north fish ageing project with Dr. Tom Johnston • Responsibilities included coordinating and scheduling aging samples of sport fish from far north lakes in Ontario, preparing and processing samples, ageing fish calcified structures, archiving samples, managing databases and training junior staff on fish ageing procedures
