Like many of you, I believe equity is symbiotic with education. As an advocate of lifelong learning 'and doing', my interest in Continuing Education & Training (CET) was deepened by two overseas stints. Under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI), I trained 50 government officials with diverse portfolios in the capital cities Vientiane and Phnom Penh in 2016. The 3-week full-time 'Advanced English Language & Communication Skills' course was developed by British Academy for English Language. The training schedule of the course I taught in Phnom Penh can be viewed at https://goo.gl/ls1jz9. Launched in November 2000, the IAI covers a host of human resource development programmes that contribute to the objective of integrating the four newer member countries—Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam—into ASEAN. As part of Singapore's contribution, a training centre has been set up in each country. Learn more about it at https://goo.gl/PYNCM8. A most meaningful highlight was helping Singaporeans better understand and access e-Government services SingPass and MySkillsFuture in March 2018. I taught some seniors how to use the Google Chrome web browser with confidence as well. It was a very memorable day of firsts in terms of the learner profile (baby-boomers), medium of instruction (Mandarin), training venue (a community club managed by People’s Association). An excerpt of the bilingual '了解 SingPass 与 MySkillsFuture Portal' handout I prepared can be viewed at https://goo.gl/XFd8AP. Other assignments (training providers in brackets) include: ✔ SingTel Middle Managers Virtual Team Building (Futuready Asia), 2021 ✔ ICDL Digital Marketing (Genetic Computer School), 2020–2021 ✔ Stress Management at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (The Etiquette School), 2015 ✔ ICA CheckPoints Division Team Building (Mind Map Training Centre), 2015 ✔ Operationally Ready National Servicemen In-Camp Training Team Building (MMTC), 2014
Teaching drama is a long-time dream—10 years to be exact—come true. I left the Singapore Public Service in December 2012 to pursue a career in the field of drama and theatre. My most recent assignment from Shine & Grow Performing Arts Laboratory required me to train Junyuan Secondary School Drama Club members on 20 August 2019. Besides playing theatre games that challenged their ability to listen closely and react swiftly, they also worked in groups to devise and give mini performances inspired by the same stimulus. Another memorable assignment, from Culturevate LLP, involved five non-Chinese Primary 5 students (Grade 5) of Frontier Primary. I supervised them as they devised a short performance, developing their acting skills and confidence in expressing themselves in Mandarin. Their performance was staged on 25 May 2016. Now, William Shakespeare and his literary contributions greatly interest me mainly because of my undergraduate drama training and experience teaching his plays. I was the Singapore liaison for Kuala Lumpur Shakespeare Players (KLSP). KLSP gets students to understand the Bard on their feet. It also conducts pre/post-show workshops for them and holds post-show discussions for audience members. Learn more at klshakespeare.com.my and facebook.com/ShakespeareDemystified.
As a lover and supporter of the arts, I work predominantly in theatre and film: I have played 23 roles, directed 13 groups of actors and designed 3 sets. I write as well. In addition, I have gained industry experience having assumed the following positions: - stagehand - followspot operator - soundboard operator - light board operator - lighting designer - assistant technical manager - assistant stage manager - stage manager - front-of-house manager - exhibition guide - gallery sitter My most recent position was a gallery sitter cum actor at 'For the House; Against the House: _____ is Dead', an exhibition presented by OH! Open House as part of Singapore Art Week 2023. Since 2009, OH! has been telling alternative stories of Singapore through art and creating opportunities for all to understand as well as connect with the everyday on a more meaningful level. Another memorable experience as a gallery sitter took place at 'As We Were', a month-long exhibition presented by SEED the Art Space with support from HeluTrans Artsmove in 2021. Three memorable early acting experiences come to mind as well. The first-ever role I played was sitcom character Phua Chu Kang, an eccentric Singaporean renovation contractor, at the Society for Reading & Literacy Reading Carnival held in Singapore Botanic Gardens on 11 September 1999. In early 2000, I made my theatrical debut as 60-year-old Dr Ivan Romanovich Chebutykin in Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters, which was staged at the former Bukit Timah campus of National Institute of Education. On 23 February 2001, I assisted Professor Robert Yeo with the launch of his book The Singapore Trilogy at The Book Café—I played Ang Siew Chye, the protagonist in his trilogy of plays 'Are You There, Singapore?', 'One Year Back Home' and 'Changi'. To keep abreast of best practices and recent developments in the arts, I actively look out for opportunities to learn from, train alongside and collaborate with practitioners as well as enthusiasts.

My writing skills develop further with each passing day as I teach, learn about, edit and write—most regularly on Instagram—English. During my tenure as a public servant, I marked innumerable student essays of various genres as well as proofread my fair share of official correspondence and documents such as school graduation certifications. As a copy editor, I have three professional highlights: In September 2015, I edited the manuscript of travel writer Liau Yun Qing's debut 'Your Big Break: Guide to Leaving Your Job to Travel the World and Back'. It can be purchased at yqtravelling.gumroad.com/l/yourbigbreak. In June 2014, I edited the emcee script for the 2013/2014 Young Author Awards organised by Janus Education Services and held at Woodlands Public Library Auditorium. Guests at the event included Ms Triena Neoline Ong, Dr Yek Tiew Ming and then Minister of State Mr Teo Ser Luck. You can watch the video recording of the event at https://goo.gl/k7I5CB. On a related note, I was a mentor of the Young Author Club @ Marine Parade Public Library, another initiative by Janus Education to nurture the creative literary aspirations of young students. During every monthly get-together session, participants can exchange ideas about their stories, the theme for the month and more. From April to September 2013, I edited the page proofs of the following titles published by Pearson Education South Asia: ✎ All About Social Studies Normal (Technical) Secondary 1A and 1B Coursebooks ✎ All About Social Studies Normal (Technical) Secondary 3 Coursebook ✎ From Colonies To Independent Nations: Selected Studies In Southeast Asian History Textbook Examples of my writing include the article 'Reading Ambassador Programme Meets Innergy Award' in 2012 (http://tiny.cc/np6iaz) and my reimagination of Mr Kuo Pao Kun's The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole in 2002 (https://goo.gl/iWsmqr). I engage and entertain audiences at public and private events. My voice type is tenor and I especially enjoy singing The Beatles, Depeche Mode and Oasis. The highlight of my career is my involvement in the 2016 Pei Chun Alumni Homecoming Dinner. Prior to its commencement, I co-hosted the final tour of the school's former compound attended by Minister of State Mr Chee Hong Tat with Alumni Association President Ms Lee Huay Leng. I not only carried out the usual emcee duties for a sit-down dinner, but also entertained over 400 guests by leading a mass singalong of golden oldies such as 'Semoga Bahagia', '细水长流' and 'Sing Your Way Home'. My most recent engagement took place at The Hive Lavender, Vanguard Campus. Miss Isabel Ong and I shared emcee duties at Generation Singapore’s Alumni Community Launch in 2019. This organisation works to provide a career-launching job for every youth in the world and collaborates with SkillsFuture Singapore for the capacity building of Singapore’s post-secondary educational institutions. We ensured the comprehensive event agenda, including the introductions of Asia-Pacific COO Prateek Hegde and the three guest speakers for the night, kept flowing smoothly till the end. Although emceeing is not my main source of income, I stay sharp by organising games and other hands-on activities at social gatherings. To get 'in role', I sometimes use a microphone that is connected to my Roland CM-30 portable amplifier. My work as an educator constantly tests my ability to think on my feet and improvise as well. Do contact me should you wish to discuss an opportunity or engage me.
I manage a humble social enterprise in the form of a cultural gift shop selling mostly pre-loved compact discs, books and anime merchandise. Previously located at Riverside Point followed by The Cathay, it is currently transitioning from a pop-up inside a store to an itinerant stall. Its mission is to find good homes for cultural goods at fair prices . All proceeds fund the operations of touch-n-take, a non-profit I founded in October 2020—learn more about it further below. This is my first foray into the IT industry, albeit as a side hustle. I am able to learn on the job, as well as from my more senior colleagues, to improve my overall performance. My main responsibilities are the disconnection, relocation and reconnection of desktop computers together with their peripherals. I have been deployed on an as-needed basis in offices at Bank of America and Morgan Stanley Asia Singapore.
I first assisted my artist friend Hao Pei when he was conceptualising his mixed media installation 'Withering Rice, Flourishing Sovereignty' at The Substation Gallery in January 2021. Learn about the artworks I have assisted him with by clicking the icons below:
