  • Master's Thesis: Synthesis of sustainable nanomaterials for Lithium Sulfur Batteries at Department of Chemical & Process Engineering
    May 2024 - Aug 2024 · 4 mos

For my thesis, I synthesized activated carbon, and evaluated its potential as a host material for sulfur in lithium-sulfur battery (LSB) cathodes. This project focused on sustainable materials and waste valorization for next-gen energy storage systems. The activated carbon used was derived from locally sourced biomass, specifically spent coffee grounds, while other eco-friendly components, such as polyurethane, were incorporated to enhance the performance and sustainability of the composite materials used in the LSB cathodes. Key achievements: • Material Development: Converted spent coffee grounds into activated carbon using pyrolysis at 450°C and subsequent chemical activation, achieving an activation yield of 82.36%. The process optimized key parameters like temperature and residence time, resulting in an overall yield of 13.46% from the initial biomass. • Characterization Expertise: Acquired hands-on experience with advanced material characterization techniques, including TGA, SEM, FTIR, and N₂ adsorption analysis, to assess thermal stability, structure, and surface properties. For example, SEM was used to evaluate sulfur doping efficiency by visualizing structural changes, while TGA provided insights into thermal behavior and sulfur-carbon interactions across composites. N₂ adsorption analysis revealed significant enhancements in surface area (916 m²/g) and pore structure following activation, confirming the successful synthesis of mesoporous activated carbon. • Electrochemical Analysis: I studied the impact of sulfur loading on cell performance across various sample ratios, providing insights into optimizing composite materials for better capacity and cycling stability. Through this work, I deepened my knowledge of energy storage systems and advanced characterization techniques. The depth of analysis and my interpretation of results was reflected by the grade i received for this project: 69.

  • Production Leader at Decathlon
    Nov 2022 - Jan 2023 · 3 mos

I was trained to manage the end-to-end manufacturing cycle for technical sporting goods, ensuring that industrial excellence met Decathlon’s global standards. This role required a balance of technical oversight, strategic partnership management, and a commitment to ethical production. I was trained to oversee diverse production lines, to be optimizing workflows, to meet strict lead times while maintaining Decathlon’s signature efficiency. While I found immense value in the fast-paced world of industrial production, I chose to depart this role to pursue an advanced Master’s degree. This decision was a calculated step in my long-term career roadmap, allowing me to refine my technical specialization and pivot toward the Energy sector.

My first Masters project in Algeria was achieved at the refinery of Algiers: an experimental study of the performance of a new proposed natural adsorbant for the purification of the wastewaters that resulted from the oil refining processes. This internship included a thorough formation to water quality control and analysis methods such as UV-visible spectrophotometry for the characterization of effluents and a general induction to the refinery and its different units such as the Atmospheric Distillation unit and the Health Safety, Environment service. The outcomes of the experiments after treating the wastewater with diatomite revealed that the treated effluent meets or falls below widely accepted industrial liquid discharge standards. Specifically: Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD): Achieved a concentration within the permissible limit, ensuring the water quality meets industry standards. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5): Maintained a concentration that aligns with acceptable levels, reflecting a positive impact on the water's biological health. Hydrocarbon Content (HC5): Attained a concentration well below the prescribed threshold, indicating successful reduction in pollutants harmful to the environment.
