      Dr Shankar Varadarajan lab (11/2017 - 06/2023): Targeting mediators of apoptosis and/or cell metabolism in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. I have been involved in a range of projects, including, but not limited to: - Exploring the therapeutic potential of BH3 mimetics in head and neck cancer. - DHODH as a potential therapeutic target in head and neck cancer. - mTOR targeting in head and neck cancer. - The role of CIP2A in head and neck cancer. - The role of ER shaping proteins in mitochondrial dynamics, bioenergetics and apoptosis. _________________________ Dr Jason Parsons lab (11/2014 - 11/2017): Investigating the cellular response to complex DNA damage induced by ionising radiation, with a focus on head and neck cancer. I performed a deubiquitylase siRNA library screen, in conjunction with irradiation using x-rays (University of Liverpool), alpha particles (University of Oxford) and high- and low-energy protons (Clatterbridge Cancer Centre), to identify enzymes involved in the processing of complex (clustered) DNA damage and therefore potential therapeutic targets. In parallel, I examined the impact of specific histone modifications on complex DNA damage repair, and assessed the influence of the human papillomavirus on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma radiosensitivity.
