I have a lovely partner, four beautiful children aged between 2 and 19, and live in a quiet cul-de-sac in East Cornwall. I have a passion for teaching and a love of learning that I hope transmits itself to my students so that the learning experience is not only valuable, but also fun! I like to run and body-board, and occasionally fall off surfboards. Teaching Experience: I have been teaching in a variety of settings for the past 30 years. I began my professional life as a youth worker before going onto university, and after that I have worked in residential centres with disaffected young people in North Wales, set up and taught on alternative educational programmes for permanently excluded year 11 students in Plymouth. Between 2002 and 2010 I worked as a manager and tutor with Cornwall Adult Education Service delivering courses for 16+ in English Language, English Literature, History and Initial Teacher Training, as well as a wide range of staff training including safeguarding and health & safety. For the past ten years I have also delivered English and History as a private tutor on both a 1:1 and small group basis covering Key Stage 3 (11-14 year olds), Key Stage 4 (14-16 year olds), GCSE, AS and A’ Level, the new Pre-U awards, and up to degree level. I now work as a full time tutor/trainer and educational consultant. Specialties: Tutoring Approach: I prefer to be student centred and led in my approach to teaching so that the experience is led by the student’s interests and aspirations, and the learning journey is owned and invested in by the student. There is no such thing as a bad student, only bad teaching, and I try to be the best that I can be so that the learning journey is a voyage of discovery for both student and teacher. I strongly believe in facilitation, not imposition.
