I am a professionally trained proofreader and copy editor, and also a concerts manager and arts administrator with 30 years' experience working in the professional arts sector in Northern Ireland. My expertise is in classical music (all periods), electroacoustic music, opera and arts management; my wider proofreading and editing interests include the arts, humanities and social sciences, history and natural history, biography, management and arts policy. I am a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading. 400 international delegates in Belfast for a week of academic papers and 28 separate concert events. The ICMC is the pre-eminent gathering of international experts in the field and had only been to the UK on one previous occasion; this was its first visit to Ireland. Responsibilities included co-ordination of the academic and concert programme; preparation and publication of conference Proceedings, venue hire, accommodation, technical co-ordination, concert management, and organising of the conference banquet.
Assessment and management of all music/opera grant applications and awards to individuals and organisations, both professional and voluntary, using Lottery and Treasury funds. Financial and artistic appraisal of particular projects, new proposals, and of existing clients’ overall work. Written reports, policy and position papers on music and opera for the Arts Council, as well as advice to Council members, colleagues, external bodies, clients, and members of the general public on all matters relating to music and opera. Project management of particular initiatives, including the Opera Summer Schools 1999 and 2000.
Appointed to write a review of opera in Ireland. Reviewing and appraising Arts Council policies and funding programmes for opera and the financial and artistic assessment of professional opera companies in Ireland; providing a survey of opera promoting venues in Ireland, and making recommendations for the development of future opera policy for the Arts Council. The Opera Review was published by the Arts Council in 2002.
