Peggy Sue Amison Artistic Director, East Wing (2014 - present) | Independent Curator & Writer Based in Berlin, Germany Peggy Sue Amison is Artistic Director of East Wing, a platform for international photography founded in Doha, Qatar in 2012. With over 20 years of experience, her curatorial practice centers on post-colonial perspectives, collaborative exchange, and global engagement, with past curatorial projects in Africa, the Arab region, China, Europe, and North America. Recent curatorial projects include "From the Ground Up", opening at Galleri Image in Aarhus, Denmark in August 2025, with a symposium scheduled for September 27; "Imagine Another Perspective" at Alfred Ehrhardt Stiftung, Germany (2024); "FUTURE TENSE" at FORMAT Photo Festival, UK (2023); "Ground State – Fellowship Within the Uncanny" for LagosPhoto Festival in Nigeria and the Republic of Benin (2023); and the touring exhibition "In Between / In Transit," which travelled from Denmark, to the United States, Ireland, and Germany between 2016 and 2021. She currently leads "Reimagining African Narratives," a six-month fellowship and masterclass developed in collaboration with NEWF (Nature, Environment & Wildlife Filmmakers) in South Africa. Previously, Amison served as Artistic Director of Sirius Arts Centre in Ireland (2001–2014) and was a founding board member of the Belfast Photography Festival. She is a regular juror and portfolio reviewer at international photography festivals (2005–present), and actively mentors emerging artists. As a writer and editor, she contributes to artistic journals and catalogues throughout Europe and the US. Her most recent article, Christian Patterson: “GONG CO.”, was published in Dear Dave Magazine (US) in May 2025. Peggy Sue holds dual Irish and American citizenship and is currently based in Berlin.
East Wing is an international platform for photography founded in Doha Qatar, working in the digital sphere, promoting contemporary artists who use photography from all around the world. The focus of East Wing is to develop promote dialogues and discourse in contemporary photography. Presently we are working outside the physical space, discovering new tools in order to open up these dialogues and introduce exciting works by the visual artists we represent. In addition to my work with East Wing I also work as a Freelance curator and mentor in the visual arts. My main area of expertise involves photography. Past exhibitions have been presented in Poland, Ireland, China, Germany and Denmark and the United States. My work mentoring artists involves assisting in the development of projects, networking and finding ways to best disseminate these projects once they are ready for exhibition.
Development Director for al markhiya gallery's presentation of "Living: Architectures of Memory" by Qatari artist Bouthayna Al Muftah at the inaugural Art Basel Doha (February 2026). In this role, I am overseeing the production and advising on strategic promotion of this major site-specific installation at Doha Design District and M7, created exclusively for Art Basel's debut in the region. The work continues Al Muftah's critical research into Qatar's history, cultural heritage, and collective memory, engaging audiences in vital conversations about the preservation of nature, oral histories, and cultural traditions in an era of rapid transformation. My responsibilities include coordinating cross-functional teams, advising on and and developing promotional strategies for this important project that showcases the artist on an international art platform.
Curator of the exhibitions "Shadow Nor Sun" by Jordanian/American artist Tanya Habjouqa. Begun in 2009, "Shadown nor Sun" examines how Israel's occupation reshapes Palestinian life through political control, environmental degradation, and restricted access to land and resources. The images trace moments of confrontation and daily endurance as environmental harm and political violence push communities away from the land that sustains them. The question is not whether this is strategic. The question is what endures, and at what cost. Palestinian existence is shaped by loss, endurance, and the insistence on remaining in place. To remain on the land is an act of resistance. In Gaza, there is no land left to stay on. Habjouqa uses the everyday as evidence and the absurd as disguise, borrowing from magical realism to trace the systems that sort people into the categories — criminality, citizenship, race — that determine who belongs and who is surplus, here and elsewhere. She was awarded by World Press Photo in 2014 for "Occupied Pleasures" the first chapter of this long term collaboration with Palestinan people. Her work is held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Carnegie Museum of Art; the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; and the Arab Image Foundation, Beirut. She is currently completing an MFA at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A founding mentor of the Arab Documentary Photography Program, she has taught at Bard–Al Quds. She is represented by The East Wing. Fotofestiwal celebrates their 25th Anniversary this year and it was an honour to be asked to curate Tanya Habjouqa's work as part of their open programme for this edition.
Instigator, Facilitator, and Co-Author of this six-month masterclass, developed in collaboration with NEWF through my role as Artistic Director of East Wing. Working alongside mentors Alexa Becker (Germany), Rehab Eldalil (Egypt), and Federico Estol (Uruguay), I authored this initiative with NEWF, which was conceived in the summer of 2024, officially launched in the fall of 2024, and ran from February to December 2025. Reimagining African Narratives was a six-month photography fellowship dedicated to fostering responsible collaboration from an African perspective. Through a combination of online and in-person workshops, participants received expert mentorship to develop long-term projects, challenging traditional documentary formats, and engaging global audiences through hands-on editing and publishing sessions.
