Founded in 2004, CCRG is Australia’s largest multi-disciplinary critical care research facility with 80+ world-leading clinicians, engineers, scientists, economists, & support staff from 6 continents. Under his leadership, CCRG has several purpose-built biology, engineering, bio-fabrication labs, and is renowned as the largest preclinical ICU in the southern hemisphere. In Jan 2020, Fraser established the COVID-19 Critical Care Consortium with A/Prof G LiBassi & Dr J Suen. The Consortium has since facilitated the collection of millions of data points from ICU COVID-19 patients across 7 continents to aid intensivists decide treatment pathways for the critically ill. The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) lauding the Consortium’s innovative global efforts as a quantum change in data collection in medical research. John has 5 professorships with major Australian universities, published >750 peer-reviewed publications, received AUD120+million in competitive grants, delivered over 200 national and international keynotes and lectures, and is the senior editor of the most comprehensive textbook on Mechanical Circulatory Support. He has been awarded many international research awards, including the 2018 Australian Society of Medical Research Award. His multi-disciplinary research extends from basic science, preclinical, international clinical bionic heart and lung, sepsis and respiratory support in resource-poor countries. He led Australia’s first-ever intentional NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Artificial Heart & Lungs. Driven by a desire to translate great research into better clinical outcomes, Fraser co-founded BiVACOR with its inventor Dr Dan Timms in 2007; and De Motu Cordis (DMC), an award-winning med-tech start-up, to revolutionise emergency drug delivery. The admission of his father to the ICU encouraged him to work on improving patient-centred outcomes through the creation of 'ICU of the Future’ – a model that is revolutionising intensive care so patients THRIVE, not just survive. He is the father of 5 great children Ben, Dominic, Nicholas, Lucy and Tommy.
St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The hospital has been providing excellence in care for critically ill patients since it introduced intensive care beds at St Andrew's in 1964. The 15-bed state-of-the-art ICU opened in its new format in 2010. While the priority is to ensure patients make a quick and full recovery, the ICU team also do all they can to reduce the anxiety for the loved ones of patients and work with them to provide first class care and service. The unit is run by a dedicated team of professionals and senior ICU specialists; a skilled ICU registrar is in the hospital 24/7 and is dedicated solely to this unit. The unit's specialist team provide on call care every hour of every day.
