All the R&D projects including blue sky (TRL 0-3), and enabling (TRL 4-6) are under my remit. I lead several projects (academic and industrial) and consultancies. I have several innovations and inventions including co-inventing the Desai-Zimmerman Fluidic Oscillator, Self actuated wastewater aeration device (TOAD) for WWA, Desai-Zimmerman Bioreactors ( capable of up to 10 fold increase in biomass for certain strains) , Desai-Zimmerman Waste Factory ( Microbubble mediated ammonia recovery process -DZ MMARP), 3 unit operations ( distillations, stripping, and sorption), sole inventor of a micro/nano droplet generating system - Desai MND, and scaffold development for various applications. I am co-developer/co-inventor of microbubble mediated biodiesel generation, microflotation, aquaculture, staged distillation, Leidenfrost like effect for variety of applications such as lyophillisation and PyOil dewatering, and a host of other projects. I am lead or technical lead on projects/grants totalling £5.8 Mn (overall £12.4Mn). I am an industrial supervisor for 2 PhD students. I have consulted over 35 companies, providing creative solutions for their problems. I also deal with commercialisation and licensing aspects for the company.

I have experience with bubble generation mediated by fluidic oscillation (matching the fluidic circuit, designing purpose built fluidic oscillators & membrane interactions), cloud bubble visualisation (acoustic, photonic & optical), cloud bubble dynamics (non-equilibrium thermodynamics, formation dynamics, wettability interactions) & finally bubble applications (hot microbubble injection in thin liquid layers). I have also designed and developed a self actuated fluidic oscillator which is currently being optimised in order to replace traditional aeration systems (designated as the TOAD). Prima facie experiments demonstrate a 200-300% improvement over traditional aeration systems. I have worked on miniaturisation of the Tesar-Zimmerman fluidic oscillator (TZFO) as well as development of a new oscillator (DZFO). I have extended the acoustic bubble visualisation technique in order to be used in large scale aeration plants thereby providing (for the first time) the ability to garner bubble sizes in an operational plant. Since October, 2015, I have worked on hot microbubble injection and designed the prototype system and process which has outperformed all industrial comparators by 3 orders of magnitude.

Design of a miniaturised fluidic oscillator & matching the fluidic circuit in order to successfully engender microbubbles in existing set up. Update & upgrade of existing set up coupled with successful implementation of the fluidic oscillator. There was a successful outcome to this project resulted in nearly a 400% improvement with Water and over 40 % improvement in an unoptimised condition for the Ionic Liquid. Further work is to be performed as part of a studentship.

The project (albeit commercially confidential), involved design of fluidic circuitry, miniaturisation of the fluidic oscillator, bubble generation & visualisation in a novel (previously unstudied) liquid, effect of liquid crossflow concomitant with oscillation, physico-chemical interactions between keggins formed within the high ionic strength aqueous liquid, and other novel approaches leading to several new techniques being invented and an enhanced understanding of the physical chemistry of the liquid in question and bubble formation dynamics for a gamut of liquids for oscillatory flow.
