- Independently taught a class of ~30 undergraduate students interested in health sciences research-related technical and soft skills for the school year 2021-2022. - Supported students in each phase of the research process from finding a mentor and lab to presenting at a university-wide symposium resulting in over 4 students receiving awards for their research project presentations. - Crafted 25+ custom lectures that supported goals of the program and engaged students in an inclusive learning environment that fosters curiosity, professionalism, and advanced critical thinking, while also focussing on career paths and advancement in health sciences. - Individually met with students on at least a monthly basis in order to mentor students in a more personalized setting, answer student questions, and provide a safe space for students to express concerns.
Research Project: Mixed Methods Assessment of Diabetes Adjustment in Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Department: Department of Family Medicine, Michigan Medicine Principle Investigators: Dr Melissa Dejonckheere, Dr Dana Albright During her time with this research project, Piya completed the following: - 8h/week: Conducted phone recruitment by interacting with patients to develop a brief psychological screening measure to gain a better understanding of type 1 diabetes adjustment - 4h/week: Organized and managed data to ensure a smooth workflow and team co-ordination
Research Project: Ex-Vivo Heart Perfusion (EVHP) Department: Department of Surgery Research Principle Investigators: Dr. Robert Bartlett, Dr Alvaro Rojas-Pena During her time here, Piya performed the following: - 12h/week: Ensured that out-of-body heart remains alive by diagnosing - Assisted with surgeries, animal handling, data collection and handling - Won UROP's Blue Ribbon Award for research poster/presentation on 4/22/2020
During the 4-week volunteer program at Paras Hospitals Panchkula, Piya Garg worked with the Quality Assurance Department and interacted one-on-one with admitted patients for their feedback. Piya also worked at the Intensive Care Unit, assisting families of patients during councillings and working with conscious patients.
During the course of this 4-week program, Piya shadowed and observed Dr. Nupur Shah at the Fetal Medicine Dept at Paras Bliss Hopsitals, Panchkula.
